Not a frequent poster, but do fairly often read this forum.
Just an observation but it is really annoying how so many threads start off on a question and then someone brings up an issue and entire thread becomes a de-bugging thread for page after page
Like this one, or even the listening impression thread, where it seems a 1/3 to 1/2 the posts are technical issues, with nothing to do about listening impressions.
As for the original question, I would highly recommend the Bryston bdp-1 or 2.
I have years of experience with this product in another friends system. It has bested a DCS Scarlatti transport. And most recently, I finally got it over to my place to hear in comparison against my bridge on my PWD mk2.
Many have posted that they felt the bridge was the best input for that DAC or at least second behind the PWT. Well I can promise the Bryston trounced the bridge with a crummy Spdif cable of $150 and on an input that had never been used.
better texture
better tone
better rhythm
better sound-staging
and a lot better bass - the bass alone was worth it, much fuller, cleaner, and fully rounded notes developing in space
So I am on the fence about the DS upgrade and after hearing the Bryston bdp-1, I am tempted to spend money there first.
I am am also tempted to seek out a dealer who carries Aurender xl100, which is a similar product, but after talking with him, he can’t profess that the Aurender is better even though it costs a little more, and is a little sexier. So that has kind of diminished my desire to make the drive to hear the comparison myself. Especially since I have been nothing but blown away by its performance when I first heard the bryston like 3-4 years ago.
oh and reportedly with the latest firmware from bryston it can do DSD via USB, it can act as a memory player for other transports, and for awhile now it can be fed from a NAS.
