What are you listening to now (BACCH Edition)

That is a great album for Bacch. The only time I disliked it was with the master fuse. He was no longer Muddy just some unrecognizable guy called McKinley Morganfield master of the Ukulele.

We also got to play with a pair of SR Black Boxes another product labeled SNAKE OIL by some. I can say it works! I don’t know how but it just does. Maybe we need a SR Black Box thread.

I tried one of these several years back and could hear a difference but thought it did not justify a purchase. Every component and cable has changed since then so maybe it’s time for another look.
I’m also a bit reticent to adopt the super hype that promotes most of SR claims. But, hearing is believing.
Why not another ā€œblack boxā€?

Go ahead and start a SR Black Box thread if you would like. It is an interesting device.

I’m not sure how many actually have the black boxes.

Maybe a thread would sniff them out. And someone may know a bit about how they work. I would like to learn about them.

I own two Magical Black Boxes and sadly I find them to be extremely useful. I might get a third.

I use a SGC i5 sonic transporter feeding Roon. Via Ethernet. My min I use Roon ap instead of Roon Daemon as end point. This also the HDMi out on mini to be fed into my HT processor and have album art via cable instead of using an appletV to mirror ipad screen which is lower video quality the mini does les work than hosting Rooon database. It sounds great dumping USB to the mk2.

An optical converter should work if high quality but need a good USB cord from babyface to mini.

Many folks ask to listen to Pink Floyd when they visit. I have stereo versions up to 24-192, and DSD64 and quad/surround versions in 24-96 and DSD64. Meddle is my personal absolute favourite, particularly Fearless. Though I only have Meddle in FLAC. I do not find the surround sound versions… based on the original quad versions I guess… so natural sounding in terms of what instrument track comes from what speaker at any time though. And although the vocals are generally centred in all versions, the drums seem very glued to the front left and right speaker in all versions. And maybe that is just the way it is always mixed on purpose.

BACCH manages at least to get Fearless somewhat unglued from the speakers. Some of the drums still sound like they come from the direction of the speaker. But maybe not always exactly from the same distance. BACCH comes across more natural.

Incidentally, the 2016 version sounds like it could be suffering some loudness wars. The opening chord of Fearless should not be that strong. The 2021 is lighter and more expressive. And with BACCH it is an immersive experience.

Bear with me as I don’t have a Bacch set-up or for that matter listen to multi-channel, so posting here may be less than appropriate. My Pink Floyd collection in general tends to be early releases on vinyl. Especially The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, UmmaGumma, Meddle, DSOTM, and Wish You Were Here. Lost interest in the Floyd after WYWH. I’ve a DSOTM SACD around here somewhere, never listened to it. I’d like to think Meddle would sound fantastic on a Bacch system.

JMHO, we hate to listen to multi channel stereo, BACCH on the other hand makes everything sound better… some things way way better. Hard to describe, but it always sounds natural.

Every once in a while we turn BACCH off and can’t believe we used to think that was great sound, no a/b ing needed.

Just our thoughts,

@weedeewop OMG your post reminded me that I picked up Piper at the Gates of Dawn in 24-192 last year and have not even listened to it. Having just tried, without BACCH, I cannot stand to listen to it. It sounds so simple, mono like, with some instruments to the left and others to the right, glued to the speakers. This is to me unexpected given how many times I played my Nakamichi cassette of the vinyl that I so carefully recorded to cassette… fading down and up manually between each track… forty years ago.

Accidentally, I selected The Scarecrow for playback. With BACCH, it sounds like Felix Laband. Something from this millennium. A full soundstage with ticking sounds here and there, so 3D. Without BACCH, it sounds like 2D crap. BACCH means I can listen to old masterpieces again!

@Steve08226 But please understand, when artists are creating with modern, object-oriented systems like on Yello’s Point from 2020 in ATMOS, or Rodriguez Jr’s 2022 Blisss in ATMOS, the BACCH playback of the stereo versions of these works does not win in comparison with playback on a good ATMOS system.

But I guess that is why there is always the next level with BACCH, like BACCH 3D Trajectory! It is the 3D metadata that is key.

My Piper at the Gates of Dawn is an early Pink Floyd US Tower Records release. No 24-192 version here.

Hmm… looks like a weird yank version you have there to me. The Beatles complained about weird releases like Hey Jude not Let it Be in the USA. Unfortunately, given my childhood, I do not recall if mine came from Canada, the UK or from Australia. Pictures to follow. But in 2021, Pink Floyd Music Ltd did put out a 24-192 version that may well be available to you behind the USA event horizon if you engage a VPN!

Which one of you provides new impetus in the list? I think a lot of the recordings there are very good. However, I have to admit that my current favorite is IKIGAI Audio’s Qobuz playlist. An absolute recommendation for those who haven’t heard it yet.

It has lots of unavailable selections. 18 total. Those will make the playback hang up often times.

I don’t have that many, but I haven’t counted. I also can’t select some of the Bacch lists. Apparently, Qobuz does this differently depending on the country. Also, it annoys me that some of my favorite titles are no longer available on Quboz after a while. But no playlist sticks with me.
I have 169 titles in the Ikigai list.
141 in the Bacch. For example, I can’t open the penultimate two of Pink Floyd either.
