This isn’t a recording of their hits. Instead, it’s a covers album, revisitng tunes that they cut their teeth on in the early days before releasing their own albums. And it’s a wide and varied selection of tunes. Many are country (they first gained notoriety with country hits before veering off on the path they follow now), but others, not so much. There are tunes here originally performed by Waylon Jennings, John Anderson (the lead-off single “Swingin’”), Patty Loveless, Elvis (“Don’t Be Cruel”), Freddy Fender, even Springsteen (“Hungry Heart”). And it’s all filtered through the Mavericks sound machine with their influences of country, Tejano, rock and Latin. It sounds like they had a lot of fun recording these tunes.
I’ve already played through it once on Qobuz (16/44.1) this morning. I’m waiting for the limited edition colored vinyl copy to arrive (it’s available only in indie record stores), and I’m thinking it will be out in 24/96 soon as well, as their last album Brand New Day is available that way, as is the single of “Swingin’” via Qobuz.
Qobuz. HR. I bought this as a CD at a local Pramsohler concert, and thought I had posted it before but the picture is either absent or misfiled. I prefer to listen to the HiRres stream because the sound is better, not much, but still better. A light and lively selection from Corelli, Telemann and others.
What a couple of days! My father-in-law just passed, he was 91 with pretty severe dementia, in a rather tragic way. Almost exactly 1 year after my mother-in-law passed in a very dramatic way as well. He was salt of the earth and died the same sweet, gentle man I’ve always known. Verbal expressions of hallucinations about people and things he loved. Always thinking about others. It was horrible and life affirming at the same time.
