King Crimson, “The Night Watch,” recorded at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, November 23, 1973. A legendary performance in excellent sound quality.
Always a fun one, especially the over the top cover of the Forest of No Return from Babes in Toyland.
Part of any Core Crimson Collection, assuming you have the appropriate Discipline.
Saw Tomeka Reid and her Quartet with Mary Halvorson in Madison and again in Stevens Point. Fantastic music.
Qobuz. CD. I have never been a fan of vocals in classical music, be they opera, oratorios or cantatas, and try to avoid such works. Every so often I check to see if my arbitrary prejudice is intact. There is nothing wrong with this album. The arrangements were a bit sparse but Ms Von Otter has a very pleasant voice, particularly when she resists the temptation to introduce trills and warbles. I nevertheless listened to it with little enthusiasm until the penultimate track; an instrumental Piccinini chaconne. That small pearl was my reward.
What is it with that warbling!!! Sounds bloody awful in my humble opinion, and is the main thing that makes me leave the room when Opera is playing…
Qobuz. CD. Laziness led me to select another album by Musica Antiqua Koln, who tend to be a ‘safe bet’. This was a selection of popular pieces by mainstream composers. Fine, but I did not feel that it advanced my musical education much, It would be an excellent album to use as background music for a dinner party. This is useful, since my wife holds a lot of dinner parties!
BTW, thanks for the Guitar Gabriel recommendation, great Piedmont Blues playing and fantastic CD sound.
