Wow - Blast from the Past : )

Edit: @Dirk - This inspired me to watch some OGWT '75 on YT, which featured Skynyrd. Even though I never particularly cared for them, I could not fail to appreciate some of their songs and their chops. That would’ve been a year after I graduated High School, and as a Northerner, Southern Rock Bands were…(koff, koff) marginally hip. At that point, we were still more into the “message” of Neil Young’s “oldie but goodie”, “Southern Man”, which in retrospect, seems shortsighted/narrow minded.

Anyhow - thoughts on the Skynyrd OGWT performance vid:

Hair Volume perhaps exceeded stage volume. That there took a lot of work, son.

Back then it seemed there were a couple of reasons for taping two different mics on to the same mic stand. One was: “Sing into this one, and when you blow that one out, we’ll have this other one to get a clean signal from”. And in this case, “When the wireless fails on that one, we have this other one”. Not to mention two tonal options all along if they both work.

While we’re on mics - the whole Mic Stand Extended to Great Lengths and Holding it Out to the Side thing. (see Aerosmith, et al) I mean, if he ever set it down upright, it’d be way above his head. Love the '70’s. Though shortness of Stature has never been uncommon amongst lead singers and lead guitarists. I’ve often thought it may be a Motivator.

Gibson Firebird guitar (and Thunderbird bass). Cool as Hell…looking. Not great guitars, generally speaking, sorta like the SG. This is independent of somebody Really Good managing to bend it to his or her Will (see Townshend with an SG).

Wankfest Warning: Back in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in my College Daze, I got my first ‘for real’ bass from my 6-years-older brother’s high school buddy Chris Campbell, the bassist of Bob Seeger’s Silver Bullet Band. (We were all from Plymouth). It was only later on that I got over my awe of the thing and realized why he had sold it to me ; )

While I love this and several other Petersen records I rarely find myself playing his music because his great chops are just chops imho.

That was one band that had bad - luck! The overriding memory for me was watching the band on the TV and them playing Free Bird, three lead guitarists, one playing slide, each taking a turn (at least 3 times) and the soloing went on for well over a week….!!!
