a lullaby of death [regarding Faure’s Requiem]

In a sense, yes. :) "Requiem" is Latin for "rest."

If singing to a child I suggest however leaving out the Dies irae (literally, “Day of Wrath,” depicting the Last Judgment - a trumpet summons souls before the throne of God, whence the saved are delivered and the damned cast into eternal flames.)

Sweet dreams, young one . . .

Manfredo Fest “Fascinating Rhythm” . . . Concord cd I got for a dollar. Very nice smooth Brazilian sound.

Robertinho Silva “Shot on Goal” Milestone Records cd. Quite an interesting disc for a fan of Brazilian drumming like me.

Joao Bosco “Da Licenca Meu Sensor”

I posted this recording earlier (I am listening to a number of different recordings of Faure’s Requiem). I find the sculpture on the cover striking, so I asked my art historian girlfriend about the piece. It turns out to be a significant work and highly apropos.

She immediately recognized it as an effigy on the tomb of St. Cecilia, housed in a fifth century church, Santa Cecilia, in Trastevere, Rome. St. Cecilia was martyred in the third century, was the first incorruptible saint, and is the patron of musicians.

The piece, by Stefano Maderno, is one of the best and most famous examples of late Renaissance/early proto-Baroque sculpture. It depicts the position in which her body was found, incorruptible, when the tomb was opened in 1599. (Some saints demonstrate incorruptibility of their cadavers. In St. Cecilia’s case, the body still had congealed blood after centuries.) There is an engraved marble slab in front of the statute with Maderno’s sworn statement that he portrayed the body exactly as he saw it upon the tomb’s opening. This is artistically significant as well; the sculpture is a graphic representation of an actual person, not an idealized form. This predates the subsequent works of Bernini and others.

You can see in the sculpture the three axe strokes - including the wound in her neck - from her martyrdom. They then first tried to burn her, which, she didn’t, so they tried to cut off her head, which was also unsuccessful. The hands/finger positions are also significant. Astoundingly, Maderno, carved the statue when he was only 23.

Wonderful stuff.

Louis Armstrong “The Nightclubs” . . . mine has a different version of the cover as mine is the subscription edition not the general edition (has an extra track and extensive liner notes by Ricky Ricardi).

Really nice, better than the first release in the series.

The vocals are astounding.

These vocals are outstanding too! (Inside joke for Jarrett fans).
