I have most of the Suzuki Bach recordings and greatly enjoy them.
I have pretty much everything from Vol. 29 on. I also have a lot of the Herreweghe recordings with Collegium Vocale Ghent.
Both are necessary for my sanity.
I also have the Herreweghe, as well as Gardiner. I love them all. 
I like the comment, “necessary for my sanity.” Exactly! Thank God for recorded music! Without modern playback devices, someone like me with zero musical talent, wouldn’t have an outlet to express themselves musically. I shudder to think about that kind of life.

Audio playback is a way to express oneself musically?
I do not understand. This strikes me as stating buying reproductions of painting is artistic expression, or watching a football game is an athletic endeavor.

It’s all I got. Yes, I buy some art that I like and decorate my house with it. Can’t paint or create good art either. My house expresses my (and my Wife’s) taste just like my music. Can’t play baseball for crap either: never could. Do love the sport though.
What is a modern DJ? He just plays records…a musician? Of course. He reads a crowd, adds a beat… I’m just a blue collar DJ, but come to my house for a party. Everyone ends up dancing. Seriously, nearly everyone! It’s no small feat with some folks.
I understand; an expression of preferences in music. I have not thought of this as musical expression.
As a passionate audience member you also participate. There are times when the audience’s energy feeds the performers.
Disc 2 of this 2 disc set. Ace Records out of England. One of what seems like a dozen European based labels that specialize in reissuing American roots music. Thank heaven someone is doing it. That is Fats Domino on the cover. This is a great sounding reissue.
Side 2 is all demos and such. Simple, vocals, piano, maybe guitar and foot stomping. Glorious stuff. It has a lot of that NOLA rolling piano…
Took me till nearly the end of this disc, Jimmy Donley sounds a lot like Snooks Eaglin. Deep Louisiana!

More Bear Family greatness. Western Swing.
I have a recent release CD set of this music. I’m pretty sure there are better sounding sources. IMHO, the remastering is too modern (not quite enough room for the big crescendos…gets squashed). Not that it doesn’t sound good, I just think this is crazy well recorded music and better sources have to exist. Worth if for me to seek some of them out. I love this music a lot. Off to the nuts at the Hoffman Site. The concensus there is almost always educated.
One last thought for the week of music posting. In this months Stereophile is an interview with Moby on the state of modern recording, “Sound of Mind.” Moby and me don’t have much in common but his views here are spot on. He says the loudness wars are over and loudness won. A pity.
In way I don’t care. I have a limited life left and, for-all-intents-and-purposes, an infinite amount of “new” music to listen to that’s well recorded. On the other hand, so much good modern music is lost to bad “current” modern recording methods and consumer tastes (Moby blames the consumer the most).
