What are you spinning right now?

The John Carter I know is a choral composer, I believe British.

And there is the expensive sci-fi movie that was a big flop.

This John Carter is the clarinetist and jazz composer. Passed away in '91…very talented musician/composer. Doesn’t get much recognition…how many top jazz clarinet players can you name? Benny, Don Byron…that’s it for me.

I can name more than that! I met a really nice one last decade, Peanuts Hucko. One of my favorites is Pee Wee (Charles Ellsworth) Russell. That man was a true individual, and such an amazing musician. Louis Prima once called him “the most fabulous musical mind I have ever known;” Pee Wee was Prima’s right had man in his earliest bands, 1935 to 1937. I mostly know Pee Wee from his work with Eddie Condon circle bands, and his own 'fifties leader dates. A modern player, Bob Gordon, really knows his style well.

Pee Wee immediately came to mind. One of the few jazz musicians who is always musical in his ad libs.

He was something else.

I also really like Sidney Bechet’s clarinet playing, Buddy DeFranco and Jimmy Giuffre’s. . . and Lester Young played a beautiful clarinet on occasion.

A timeless follow up album to a great debut album. Neither one ever gets old.

Hans Abrahamsen: let me tell you

Damn, you have both excellent and sophisticated taste.

A new compilation of Monday’s material selected by Monday. I didn’t have all of this, and boy it’s a nice sounding collection. And for a Monday release, cheap.

Thank you Elk. Now if I only had a Directstream DAC to play through I'd be a happy camper...soon I hope! ;-)

and now for a little “guilty pleasure”…the recent remastered version sound quite good to my ears!
