I’ve been non-audio engaged for the past few months, but today I posted a new article at Positive Feedback covering a number of recent classical music recordings by Bert van der Wolf of Northstar Recording, one of my favorite recording engineers. Here’s the link for those who might be interested:
I’ve always been a big fan of Schubert’s Winterreise, and picked this recording up after reading a critical overview of various recordings of the work in BBC Music Magazine. It’s a real “drawing room performance,” with Gerald Moore and Hans Hotter right there in front of you, with nearly no room ambience, or certainly nothing hall-like. It’s a terrific performance, too. It gives my previous favorite by Peter Harvey and Gary Cooper on Linn Records a real run for its money.
Hotter was also a great Performer in Wagner Dramas and Operas. His Winterreise is outstanding …
Seems as though you are having fun. The Schubert looks interesting, the other is an audio show warhorse from days gone by.
In preparation for this week’s ISO concert: Three-Cornered Hat, Strauss II’s Emperor Waltz, and Beethoven’s 7th.

Porpora for instance was a great Neapolitanian Composer. Wonderful Recording with all the other gentlemen from that Area and Period. Thanks for sharing …
… just ordered at jpc.de.
You won’t be disappointed.
Dug this one out from the deep recesses of my CD collection not having listened to it in probably 20 or more years. I’d forgotten how off the charts beautiful it is. Lots of goose bumps.
