What Classical are you spinning?

Since a wee young one (1961-ish) this RCA LP version had always been handy and available for a listen. My brother, sister and I would gather around the console stereo and play it frequently. The above CD/SACD version being handy at the moment satisfies.

A very enjoyable recording of unjustly neglected works by Giovanni Benedetto Platti (1697-1763):

Listening to her new album back-to-back with her Mezzo Mozart is quite rewarding. I’m ok with expanding the boundaries of my classical listening.

Another gorgeous recording from perhaps my favorite early music label - -

Giovanni MOSSI (c1680-1742), Antonio MONTANARI (1676-1737): “Golden Strings - Sonatas for violin and basso continuo”

Undemanding but, nevertheless, charming and well crafted sonatas by a little known composer. Very well peformed and recorded. (available via Bandcamp) - -

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799): Sonatas for violin & fortepiano, Op. 1b (1781)

He was such an interesting and multi talented character! A rare man to have developed such high standards of athletic and intellectual capabilities, especially considering the biases he had to deal with in high society.

I’ve been non-audio engaged for the past few months, but today I posted a new article at Positive Feedback covering a number of recent classical music recordings by Bert van der Wolf of Northstar Recording, one of my favorite recording engineers. Here’s the link for those who might be interested:

I’ve always been a big fan of Schubert’s Winterreise, and picked this recording up after reading a critical overview of various recordings of the work in BBC Music Magazine. It’s a real “drawing room performance,” with Gerald Moore and Hans Hotter right there in front of you, with nearly no room ambience, or certainly nothing hall-like. It’s a terrific performance, too. It gives my previous favorite by Peter Harvey and Gary Cooper on Linn Records a real run for its money.

Because sometimes you just have to. Especially if you’re auditioning equipment.

More auditioning fare, an incredible solo piano record:
