Your Next Upgrade? (Part 1)

From your description I thought maybe you were referring to Innuos as well, which I do own and am completely satisfied with as a server/streamer. Grimm MU1 just seems intriguing. The trick is the DAC, and that will be a trick. I may reconfigure, add more storage, my Innuos Zenith Mk 3 and forgo a transport all together.
Next step after a digital reconciliation may be consolidating vinyl playback and focusing on this which has my ear at the moment.

Last Sunday I knocked Hana SL’s cantilever with Onzow’s hard case. I had SL for 4 years and kind of knew sooner or later I will mess up. Good news is that under microscope the stylus looks clean after 4 years of use of Onzow, the left and right channels both have around 28 ohms impedance. Talked to Peter of Sound Smith and will send it over for inspection / repair. l like to save the Purple Heart for later years (still in box). Got a Hana ML instead as replacement and set it up last night (66 dB gain, 250 Ohms loading).

Lofgren curve given it is a long 12 inch arm.

Test track, Left channel only

Test track, Right channel only

It is very obvious ML is a better cart comparing to trustworthy SL, a veil is removed, everything is just better, less groove noise, more air, shimmer, better imaging, more taut bass, but still maintain SL’s smooth and music flow, a worthy upgrade.

To avoid future mishap, a couple of minor changes of routine:

Installed LittleLite for better lighting (had this light for 4 years and finally put in use)

Instead of manually hold Onzow under stylus and raise up to touch / clean, now Onzow is placed on a box and use arm’s cueing to drop the stylus instead.

Time to spin more records!

OK, Boys and Girls, my next upgrade (a, hopefully, gently used PW PP 10) is in place, hooked up and being put through its paces.

Two questions for you all with P10 experience:

  1. Where did you settle on your MultiWave strength setting for best overall results; and
  2. Did anyone decide to just go with pure sign wave and, if so, why.

TIA.

Thanks for sharing that. I have been looking at the ML as my next cart.

I have a P10 and since getting a P15 it is in a headphone only set with a tubed headphone amp, DMP and DSD. I settled on MW of 3 and High Regulation as the tubes like it.

I use sine. (P20)
i’ve tried MW many times and I hear no difference. One less thing to worry about for me.
An occasional “clean wave” seems to freshen things up a bit.

Same here. I used to fuss with the MW settings but really couldn’t tell any difference so I have reset all of my PP’s to sine. As you said it’s one less adjustment to keep track of.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks.

It’s fun to play with and of course YMMV. Have fun with your new piece. Not sure if you mentioned it or not but a nice power cord to the P10 will improve everything.

Thanks again. PSA AC-12 is currently partnered with the P10.

Those are really good PC’s for the money. I have a few and enjoy them. The BAV 10 gage is a good one for the money too.

Wow. I hear clear and immediate differences between each level of MW and compared to Sine! We’re all different with different systems and rooms.

If I remember correctly your gear is all tubes and that may be the difference. My hearing may not be able to pick those diff’s out if they exist at all on my system.

Yes, all my pre- (with the exception of my phono pre) and amplification are tubed in my main system. Though in my headphone only system I have used the PS Audio GCHA and no tubes, and in my audio visual system I am using the surprisingly good sounding Sabaj A20a which are not tube and hear the difference as well.

Which MW level tends to be your “go-to” setting?

TIA.

I vacillate between 2 and 4 but usually am at 3.

Interesting…

It is possible that my system is not resolving enough to hear MW differences.
