Your Next Upgrade? (Part 1)

Build quality seems fine. The DAC end actually fits a bit more snugly/better than the Pink Faun does.

Please note the difference in performance between the two cables is incremental at best. Both solid cables.

Cheers.

They are frail at best IMHO.

@scotte1, glad to hear as the one’s I had on hand were to my eye a bit frail. aangen summed it up perfectly. I get the idea that there must be a bit of variability in the final assembly.
Cheers.

A little too stiff, but did not seem frail so far…

Since I sold both of my P10’s I’ve been using a Dectet in my office. It’s OK, definitely not anywhere near a Regenerator. Today I finally got off my lazy behind and replaced it with a Transparent Powerwave. Prior to the P20, I used the Powerwave in my main rig for things like the Shield Pro and Control4 and a few other things I couldn’t easily fit on the P10. I am so glad I replaced the Dectet. If my memory is even slightly OK from the P10, the Powerwave has restored so much of the soundstage and most importantly bass.

Note to self - be less lazy.

While they look cool, when you manage to track down the absorption vs frequency measurements for the Defi absorbers, you discover that they offer (almost) comparable performance to 2" deep fiberglass panels fixed hard against the wall. Not so impressive. For studios and AV room broadband treatment these would be inadequate.

Along the sidewalls best practice is a minimum of 4" of porous absorption mounted in a frame that allows for an air gap of 1-2" as well. For end walls you want 6" of porous absorption in a frame that again allows for an air gap of 1-2".

Output’s Eco Acoustic Panels would be much more appropriate for use in crowd noise reduction in large restaurants and other noisy public spaces. The sorts of spaces where the otherwise untreated and highly reverberant surfaces result in the sort of conversation din that makes it difficult to hear what your table mates are saying.

Well, now I know why I haven’t heard about them before for hifi treatment.

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

You are correct that the quantum platforms are no match for the 9011s. However they fit perfectly on the bottom level of my rack. The bottom level has no rollerball isolation like the top two levels…so I am assuming that the quantum is beneficial for adding some drainage to the gryphon legato legacy power supply and it’s corresponding phono preamp. If I am wrong you can have dibs on my bargain Symposium purchase.

Very nice…the system is really coming together…

Looking forward to your reporting on the new amps…

Today I got my second DS DAC with Bridge II pre-installed. New on special. Right out of the box, fantastic.

The rack to gear ratio is the best one I have seen. Together they look impressive! Well done!

I found three of these Control 4 Boxes in the piles of AV gear left behind. I have no Documentation. They have big cords and two big knobs. The switch left too doesn’t seem to do anything Is there supposed to be remotes? I am trying to set up a quick music streaming into the huge great room today for a party my wife is hosting. The control 4 have filtered and unfiltered outputs. I plugged the Yamaha PC2602 pro amp amp direct into wall since it can pull 15 amps alone and a definite technology powered subwoofer direct into wall versus going high current route through Control 4. The streaming devices, McIntosh MAC3, big screen LED sll plugged to filter side. Going for big room filling easy relaxed sound A first time integrating a pair of Bose 901 VIs with a subwoofer. I needed something indestructible but capable of room filling sound into large common gathering area since this will be a vacation rental.

Any quick tips an trips about using the control 4 box? Keep them or move them along? Other than displaying AC voltage I am trying to figure out why they had so many what they offer. I still need to set up a system in the Billards, bar and Game areas and master suite and get outdoor pool area set up. Likely not all today.

There’s several different components used for various different types of installations. Most likely you have a distributed whole house system. It’s hard to tell without some pics and model numbers.

Control4 is not plug and play. It may need to be programmed to your specific gear.

Thanks Vince. Looking at them they are all different. Must have been a way to integrate sound indoors and out. I used one the one for TV, McIntosh MAC3 digital processor doing Burr Brown DAC duties. The Yamaha old PC2602 pro Amp feeding the Bose 901s. The PC 2602 owners manual has some amazing plots in it and I diid have it overhauled befor I bought big boy MC amps. I actually spent 4 hours on tweaking placement and equalization today. The 901s were just killing it with just 10 gauge OFC speaker cable and cast off interconnects and power cables and using an Apple3 TV streaming high rez Tidal. I do admit they were punishing up front until greater than 8 feet but 25 To 45 feet back. Everyone was talking about them, the music and the system. Low level and up close near-field there were too many highs. But where everyone was gathered towards the back and after the high cathedral ceiling did its job, they were all as amazed as I. People snapping photos of songs album art and artists off the big screen TV thinking it was possible to duplicate at home I scrapped the sub woofer idea early on since it offered less than 2 Channel. Some of the background details I needed a Beeswax M-1 Fuse to hear in my main system, but in thise were out in spades. A lot to be learned from full range drivers and no crossover and reflective listening . It’d never work in my smaller listening room and I did miss sub 25Hz bass. But man what a surprise.

It “sounds” like your hard work really paid off. Triple word score to you for getting others excited too.

Congrats!

Aw shucks. I am going all Al again.
Tonight I had the best person I have ever had the pleasure to deal with, Jord Groen of Pink Faun and Farad, remotely access my Pink Faun to make certain everything was swell. He made a change that allows me to plug the Ethernet cable from my Grimm MU1 directly into the Pink Faun. I also have a USB cable going directly to my Gryphon Ethos DAC. So now I can easily compare the sound of each using Roon.

Jord mentioned that the last time we talked was before the Pink Faun Ultra was in full production. He was hesitant to sing a lot of praise for the Ultra before it’s official release. He now feels he is safe to do so and he believes his Ultra tops any and all other similar devices. Hmmm. He mentioned where I could get an Ultra to test. I have already made a request for one. They are kind of expensive. Not Gryphon expensive but two to three times what the Grimm MU1 costs. Fun.

So perhaps one will come my way to test. He likes to configure the PF Ultra with both AES/EBU outputs and USB. I’ll need to check it out and see how it stands up to the mighty Grimm. Reading about the internal power supplies and other features of the Ultra make it sound like overkill x 17. Fun. Another thing that excites me about the Ultra is it of course can do Roon, but it also comes with Euphony Stylus which pretty much everyone agrees sounds better than Roon. I have a Euphony server at my lake place. I have long been a fan. It isn’t Roon but it’s dang close as it handles Local and NAS drives, Qobuz and Tidal.

I told him about my Gryphon Commander and Apex arriving one of these days and he said that means I just have to get an Ultra.

Will the upgrades ever end?

BTW, the Grimm sounds much better than the Pink Faun 2.16 → USB → Ethos. Easily. But the Pink Faun Ultra easily smokes the six year old Pink Faun 2.16.
