Your Next Upgrade? (Part 1)

I have been thinking for three or four weeks now that I no longer need to concern myself with upgrading some aspect of my system. That’s a new record! Three months is an easy automated goal. Weird. Now all I can do to pass the time is listen to music. From any source, streaming, vinyl, Ethos CD, its all the same now. Just listen and forget about it.

Bah.

A nice place to be. But, what if…
Maybe we are all just Crusaders, of the Monty Python type, looking for the Holy Grail.

you seem a little disappointed. Feel free to upgrade my system to feel that rush again!

A useful option!

I think you are there as well @straightwire.
I don’t count cables.

It’s called upgraditis…that is what all of the thousands of Audio manufactures are counting on!

Only $2k to replace a full set of tubes

I know! Tube costs have stopped a few of my purchases recently. If they were “reasonable” I would have either an Audio Research GS150 or 160S.

I wonder if the cost of tubes is hurting sales for some companies.

How much of time is the BACCH SP Adio engaged these days? They emailed many options and it seems it will work seamless with my DSP. Plus it is cheaper than a few cords and cables.

I switch it out for periods extend to 5 secs and switch it back. I don’t do it often but it amuses me to do the collapse.

All the reviews on YouTube seem to love the product. They have a much less costly iMac Edition or just software option. The all in one still appeals to me.

Glad it is your new norm. That is high enough praise to convince me.

It creates nothing. It removes crosstalk that confuses the position of the various elements. This is a worthwhile achievement with no downside I am aware of. I think it is essential.

Come and listen!

While waiting for my Audeze LCDi4 to sell in anticipation of purchasing a pair of Focal Stellia, I thought I’d make a head start on an aftermarket headphone cable. As Stellia uses the the same connectors as my current Focal Celestee (a ripping bit of gear by the way and easily available for US$420 here in Australia), whatever I end up choosing can hang around for Stellia duty.

From a local forum I bought the two Nordost headphone cables, the Blue Heaven and the Heimdall 2, and then a custom cable from Aurealis cables in Brisbane. The good news is that all three easily beat the stock cable by removing a greyness and lack of resolution. Blue Heaven is a subtle but worthwhile improvement.

I’m working on getting the Heimdall 2 and Aurealis cables fully broken in, so that the n estimation is continuing, but they’re both a substantial leap ahead of the Blue Heaven is resolution, soundstage, microdynamics and tone colour.

What I’m surprised by is how awful the Heimdall sounded out if the box. Though used, the previous owner thought he’d spent less than 20 hours with it. From the cosmetic condition alone I believe him, but upon hearing it I wondered if he sold it simply because it sounded so terrible. Screechingly aggressive, compressed and aggressive. The only cable I’ve ever heard that I’d use the “is this broken” cliche for.

It now has 50 hours on it and is sounding clean, detailed and controlled in the frequency extremes. I do wonder if any Heimdall 2 owners out there can tell me their experiences with break in?

And finally, the local cable from Aurealis! It’s cheaper than either Nordost and easily betters the Blue Heaven. Compared to the Heimdall 2 it’s a case of not better or worse, just different. It excels timbre and texture while not being quite so extended or “hifi” clean. It also has better microdynamics than the Nordost cable, so t grooves harder. For now at least.

One of my favorite cables to use to build headphone cables is Neotech NECH-3001. It’s not easy to find, but it’s worth hunting for it.

This was on 6 December when Morocco beat Spain in the last 16. We were in St Martin’s-in-the-Fields listening to a performance of Handel’s Messiah and came out to join a massive Moroccan celebration.

I have a Bacch ordered but it is a 4Mac Audiophile edition. Software. and peripherals including the ready to plug in iMac. I figure it will be fun to play with feeding USB into my existing ultraRendu to Matrix via Dragon i2S to DS mk2 The iMac will take Roon fed from my i5 Sonic transporter or run its own core.

Bonus I already have enough big 12V LPS circuits idled to power the iMac M-1 optimized for audio with a DC conversion card and the Analog to Digital converter/Babyface Pro FS. if I desire to feed it other sources analog or Digital it gives me that option . That will eliminate the switching PS’s that might be dirtying up signals.

I was getting such good 3D images on. mK2 last night. I felt I need to go next level.

I will create a BACCH thread to document the journey.
