Your Next Upgrade? (Part 1)

Ever regret selling something and then buy another one?
I always missed the sound of my Pass X250.8, so another one is on it’s way. Yippee.

I surrendered to a new dollop of debt and took advantage of the tremendous deal to upgrade from a DSD Mk1 to a Mk2.

The PSU can also power the Aries DAC simultaneously

Wonderful gear!

Indeed - paid for from income tax, and a rather better use of income tax than we get these days :slight_smile:

@elk, I won’t start a bun-fight, promise!

I ordered the DSD MK2 last Friday. The generous MK1 trade-in helped me make the decision.

Now I’m totally confused about the ground lift options, but I guess I’ll have several weeks to begin to figure them out.

After $200k (at least, but who is counting) down, I am seeing the light of tunnel from my daughter college expense. This is her last semester :pray: My older one graduated from U Penn a few years back, and that was even more expensive.

Thank goodness I still have some changes left for audio stuff.

@vkennedy61 you could buy your BHK250 back…

When I saw the $45k, my brain interpreted it to say $4,500. Wishful thinking on my part.

Yes, I’ve owned the DirectStream DAC, BHK250 and Apogee Duetta all twice.

Just ordered a JL Audio CR-1! Giddyup!
Because I don’t have any children and thus I’ve saved that much money on braces.
Nor do I have a wife, but I swear if I buy one more thing, one is going to appear out of the cosmos and start laying down ultimatums…!

I can hear it now…
“Do you really NEEEED 8 pairs of headphones???”

Hey, is that why they make noise cancelling headphones? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Congrats on the CR-1. I got one to integrate my sub with 2 ch and HT. I love it. You cannot tell where the sub begins and the speakers end.

I wanted the CR1 originally but the price was too high so I went for a DBX PA2. Nice piece (balanced XLR) and I especially like that you can “draw” your EQ curve by running your finger across an iPad. Also has a mic & room correction (never cared for its results over my own). And spec wise it measured well and was even touted by some audiophiles but hey, it is still a pro-audio piece. But even with that piece, I can’t tell where the subs are or when the start or end.
But now that I have 2 (different) subs and I want more immediate hands on capability. When a track comes on that needs my expertise - I want to adjust it NOW.
Now if only I could keep the PA2’ EQ patched in when I need it… where’s the old tape loop when you need it?
I wonder if it would add noticeable noise if kept in the loop in bypass mode… ??

Note to self…AGAIN… don’t get the runner up when you really wanted the best piece to save money because you KNOW you are going to just get the one you originally wanted eventually and now you have two. :roll_eyes:

Excellent point on EQ. I use Roon exclusively so I use their DSP engine via convolution filter. Pretty simple process to do. much better than using tape loop. Just need a miniDSP mic and laptop. I went out and bought software as REW was a bit much for me, but it is free.

University was free here until 1998 and then it was about $4,000 p.a., it’s now about $11,000. Everyone gets a loan and you pay it from salary above a threshold and when you get to age 50 the balance gets written off. If you go into a low-paid profession it’s best not to repay, but most do and being a nice dad I’ve repaid most of it.

So you could argue that with (presumably) so much residual income, us over here have no excuse not to blow $50,000+ on hifi on a regular basis. We would argue that as we are relatively lowly paid and highly taxed (paying well over $750 pa) we have little disposable income and are exceedingly mean when it comes to buying hifi. Plus we are very modest people who like queues and like our hifi modest, small and relatively underpowered. I spoke to the owner of a well known Dutch high-end brand an he told me he ignores the UK market because we’re just too mean.

Meanwhile I’ve spent a few minutes today saving money with my new CAT6 termination tools, doing some rewiring as I have a new 575mbps fibre broadband service (the modem with the horizontal light). I now have the entire house of one switch, with two fibre outputs, one to the hifi server and the other to my AV. It’s a POE switch, I saved some money buying a cheap one with 55dB fans and upgrading the fans to 26dB, but the Ubiquiti access points are all fed from PoE power supplies, now all nicely screwed in. QNAP bottom left and continuous power pack lower right.

I’ve messed with the roon DSP, but I just leave the PA2 EQ curve open and when a track needs jussst a bit of say… top end boost (for my old ears) I can do a quick draw. Seeing as all recordings are so different, I’m all about on-the-fly tweaking.

Nice set up!

When I went to college it was a few thousand per year, I think. Time has surely changed.
