Your Next Upgrade? (Part 1)

Awesome speaker cable choice.

Hi Murray, what did you do with the Siltech Cabling? Or was that another system. I remember you were into the 770’s and Royal Series.

The Siltech is in the 2 channel system - Prince speaker cables, Princess and 770 interconnects, 4 Ruby Hill IIs and Royal Signature USB cable.

I realized that although my Marantz SA 11S3 sounds really good as a SACD player, using it as a DAC for streaming reveals its age and limitations. So I picked up a Pro-Ject Stream Box S2 Ultra and a Pre Box S2 Digital to feed into my minimalist upstairs system. Apart from the fact that it took me way too long to figure out the wireless networking, it sounds good right out of the box and I’m guessing will sound even better as it settles in. Adding a Chord Shawline cable this weekend (to the rebuilt NAIT2) and I’m done. At least for now.

Robert And Mike thank you.

Curious as to why you did not go with balanced inputs to the Anthem AVM 60…? Is the x60 different from the older generation of Anthem pre-pros with regard to their audiophile two channel inputs?

I am a huge ARC fan, by the way.

Enjoy your new bits and pieces. I have to believe the new speakers are proving to be a bit “transformative”.

Cheers.

The AVM60 has XLR outputs to the amp (which I use), no XLR inputs. Have to use RCAs. One of the few downsides in giving up the D2V to go to the AVM60; but this system is primarily HT.

The Contours are very good speakers, but I’ve come to really like the Joseph Audio “sound”. I’m using their Pulsar 2s in the 2 channel systems and jumped at the chance to grab their big brothers. The frontrow cables make a huge difference.

Bummer. Understood.

I don’t think I will be beyond seeking a better MC for my Rega P6 - that should just about do it.
I currently have an Ortofon Quintet Bronze doing well enough, but after many hours settle-in it still lacks a charge, an emotional connection for me. Revealing as it is, it’s a bit too polite. Thinking of matching it to Rega’s Ania Pro which is made for the stock Rega RB300 arm…perhaps.
This year I reduced the number of ‘boxes’ from 7 down to 3. Sold the separate pres, monos, PC and DAC and went for an NAD M33, all in one ‘box’ and, frankly I haven’t looked back - it’s stunning sonically and aesthetically IMO so my now’ twilight’ years are covered and dearest beloved has more room in her room…but, that new cartridge, hmmmmm.

I was so very happy with my Rega RP-10 Soundsmith turntable. It punched all my buttons. I thought it was absurd to want more. The TechDAS AFP Graham My Sonic Lab combo makes me laugh that I was so sure of myself. Hahahaha you dumb guy I thought.
Always spend more.

Sounds like an addiction—or two. One for new and exotic equipment, and the second for spending money!
Either way, you are having fun and have a healthy sense of humor about the whole circus. Cheers!

Enjoying my new LCD-MX4s. I JUST bought the LCD-Xs but my awesome Canadian supplier offered these at a unrefusable price… so I have a pair of LCD-Xs for sale cheeeeep. About 20 hours on them. Not a jaw dropping difference but the MX4s are certainly more refined. Funny, high end audio in action seems to veil the tinnitus…I’d call that a cure. Or maybe it’s the Scotch…

Yesterday I purchased a Static Electric Discharge Globe on A’gon from Neal at Sound Science. Technically this purchase was more in the nature of precautionary insurance than an upgrade but the $200 (shipping inc) price seems more than fair for the peace of mind it represents.

Does this do something beyond what a grounding wrist strap for computers does? I plugged one in next to the stack, and during the Static-y Months With an R in Them, touch the metal bit before touching gear. The grounding strap of course simply makes contact with ground easy and constant while allowing working with both hands on delicate electronics - you could achieve the same for this purpose without the strap by connecting a regular piece of wire to ground and touching that. Hmm… come to think on it, my racks are metal. Maybe should wire them to ground.

Thoughts, EE guys?

Replaced a VPI Classic 1 10.5 3DR tonearm with a VPI Avenger and Kuzma 4pt 11 tonearm

Haven’t had the chance to set the arm up yet, waiting for new cart, Dynavector XX2 replacing an Ortofon Cadenza Red

I’ll be listing the Classic on USAM later this week

Best,

If you’d compare step by step, not all together, you’d probably be surprised how big a difference a better tonearm makes!

I’m counting on it making a huge difference for what it cost🙂
It really is a nice tonearm, very well built, great adjustability, just very solid feeling, can’t wait to get it up and running!

Michael Fremer was using a Four Point on his Contiuum Caliburn - that tells you a lot. He feels it punches way above its price.

True. He liked it better even than the 6 point Johnson Rod. Which tells you something…
