Your Next Upgrade? (Part 1)

Oh, I got it. So it is really a four-box unit. Now my new rack seems too small already.

Here goes my downsizing plan. Well, I will keep it in my dream list for the time being.

You have 3 options:

DAC with 1 power supply, with a Y adapter to feed both digital and analog circuits. 1 umbilical and 1 power cord needed, 1 chassis + 1 little box.

DAC with 2 power supplies, each one dedicated to separate circuits. 2 umbilicals and 2 power cords needed. 1 chassis + 2 little boxes.

DAC with Powerbase (same chassis size of the DAC), best solution and more expensive, a single unit with 2 toroidal transformers inside to keep separated and isolated the power. 2 umbilicals and 1 power cord. 2 chassis.

This is the way.

Or the next upgrade, along with the Femto93 clock. The combo I’m testing is DAC + 2 LPSs. A good point to start.

I like the clean look of the Powerbase. Less visual clutter.

DAC/Base is the one shown in their site.

I agree “This is the Way”, and I do not even wear a helmet .

Me too. And it enhances the performances but it’s very expensive. So I take it into consideration as an upgrade within a few months.

Does your Premier have the latest firmware?

Great advice, Vince. After a few bottles of champagne for dinner with friends I’m afraid it’s time to go sleeping now. Tomorrow I’ll check the firmware for sure. Thank you so much, didn’t notice it.

I should not have talked to your guys on upgrades! I accidentally bought a Crystal Clear Audio Magnum Opus II Power cable from Audiogon 5 seconds ago. Has anyone had experience with this cable at all?

The fact that I thought I bought a Crystal cable bothers me. I need to pay more attention on the description. Oh well, I hope it is better than my Silnote that goes to PST now.

Reading more into their website, Crystal Clear Magnum Opus II PC uses 6N solid silver conductor. So, it should be a good cord to use with either PST or the streamer. I will compare it to Stealth Dream V10 first, and to the AQ Dragon Source later once it arrives. The PC is new so I will break it in with my wine cellar first for a few days. I was told it needs 200 hours to break in fully.

No worries about an absurd Dac purchase from me. The $13k I spent to get $65 k in a MBL 1621A transport and a 1611 F Dac used was the best audio deal of my life. Highly recommend folks look for a good transport to accompany their Dac so the can assemble a library of CDs at a $1 or less from Goodwill and Salvation Army hunts. They are close to analog if done right.

Do you have any idea where I could find such a device? Maybe one that does both?

In the 80s I had a nice valve based system, when valves were so cheap they were basically free.
Lots of LPs but very few CDs as they were so expensive!
Now I have transistor gear, and am building a large cD library and no vinyl to speak of.
I think, for once I got things the right way around!

You’ve been having quite a few accidents lately. :joy: I almost had an accident with a great deal on an Esoteric Grandioso DAC, but I like the way PS Audio’s DACs are balanced so I’ll just wait to try Ted’s TSS when it comes out instead. No DCS for me because my main listening is DSD 256 and DCS only goes to DSD 128. The best sound I’ve ever heard in digital happens to be DSD 256, and the MK2 is doing such an incredible job with it right now!

I didn’t know DCS does not do DSD256!

One reason I want a streamer with a great USB output is for the DSD256 too. MK2 sounds so good tonight with Omega USB playing DSD256 files from my little streamer. I can live with it a little longer. :grinning:

I can’t hear the difference between 128 and 256. Perhaps I am lucky. There’s quite a bit of reasoning behind dCS’s decision to stay with 128. The gear can process it, but they don’t feel it adds anything. The latest 2.0 firmware introduced faster processing and a few new filters, which are all available from the Mosaic app.

Remember the highly regarded Grimm goes to 192/24. I wouldn’t get hung up on numbers.

I have done extensive comparisons between DSD 128 and DSD 256 and while the differences are not great, DSD 256 does have the advantage with clarity and presence with the same recordings. Of course the quality of the server helps make these differences more apparent. HDTT gives you all their DSD 256 recordings and DSD 128 with no extra charge so it’s simple to compare.

The only time it matters is if one can’t play a DSD256 file or a 384/24 file. My full player does not play 384/24 files. My portable player does play 384/24 files, and while I actually have heard a difference between the dxd flac 384/24 file and dsd256 with headphones the difference is ridiculously small, where the dxd flac file was the original file that was ever so slightly better than the dsd256 that was a transfer.

My experience with DSD128 vs 256 was different. With DS MK1 in the past, I always prefered DSD128, the DSD256 files sounded too warm and dark in my system.

MK2 has changed the game, they sounded almost equal. When I acquired the Shunyata Omega USB cable, the DSD256 files sound better than DSD128 now.

Of course, with a superior DAC like DCS the experience would be likely different.
