Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Damn, spectacular. :open_mouth:
I’ve listened to the XRT2Ks with the MC2KWs, but never a complete HT system. :smiling_face_with_tear:

True, if you change speaker impedance it’s as if your amplifier plays for the first time.

Staying on topic:
here is the new Sonus Faber Suprema with a total McIntosh MC2.1KW + MC1.25KW system!

I’d be fearful of taking out the silk dome tweeters driving the main columns with a 1.25KWs. They are only rated to 700watts. How much could a single silk dome handle? Hopefully electronic cross over has current limiters.

I bet the paper mids and woofers sound very natural though.

Technically I imagined they could be much more powerful but we have to be careful about one aspect:

even with a 2.1KW the vu meters rarely go beyond 200-300W.
The gentleman who used the Thor’s Hammer clearly said that the needle rarely went beyond 12 watts (with an MC1.25KW).

Many times we think we necessarily have to have millions of watts when in fact a few but good ones would be enough.

I agree. :slightly_smiling_face:

I set my peaks at 12 watts. Though some orchestral dynamics can swing into a couple of hundred or some of the loudness war tracks in playlists. So I use meters to set volume to dial back that type of compressed music. My daughter has gotten more aggressive. I find her pushing volume but it is so smooth and clear you don’t realize it. The XR290 will fade out if over driven thanks to Roger putting separate current limiters into each cross over circuit for HF, MF, and LF. I would think Carl used same tricks in your speakers.

We think the same way then… :joy:

Typical of ā€œus young peopleā€ā€¦ :joy:
When I listen to pop music my mother thinks the war has started…

Carl’s system is truly very impressive. :open_mouth:

My next upgrade: Feet. I’m buying some feet for my speakers.
I tried some borrowed feet that folks seem to like. They made slight differences (I’ll assign a number of 2.3%) to bass, lower mids and upper frequencies like cymbal trails, none of which I liked. They were worse than the stock spikes.
Then I tried some borrowed Wilson Acoustic Diodes. They make a wonderful, full range difference (12.68%) that makes the crazy price seem a fair deal.
They’re on order. And the loaners had to go back, so I stare out the window waiting for the truck, like Audio the cat.

Good choice! :slightly_smiling_face:

Hopefully your upgrade survives the trip as mine did not, a Puritan PSM 156. FedEx delivery delays, and then the circuit board was loose within the chassis. Carton intact but rough handling is the suspected culprit. Initial diagnosis, all nylon chassis board mounting fasteners sheared off. It is going in to the Dr. today for remediation. It just reinforces my preference for purchasing from a brick and mortar establishment.

That must have been some pretty rough drop for that to happen as both of mine were pretty well packed. The US distributor is in the Chicago area as is Archon Audio. I bought both of my Groundmaster City units from Archon.

Puritan PSM-156 works magic for my DS MK2, I like M1200 with it too, but I prefer the rest of my gear like BHK pre, PST, streamer, switches with P15 still. Actually LHY SW-10 can go either way and on some music I like it with Puritan better. It will be interesting to hear your thought (I know you have a LHY SW-8).

With so many good reports on the 156, I’m looking forward to your reports.

Hope you aren’t in a part of the US where the winter storms might delay things.

Hard to know how hard of a drop, or drops it took. Looking at the box it wasn’t obvious, until I picked it up and heard the sound of shifting sands. My guess is rough handling pushed the susceptible fasteners over the edge, It is surprising that all 6 would have sheared off, but there it is.

I am also in the general Chicago area, and at present there are just two Puritan dealers that I am aware of Mike Kay’s Archon Audio in Libertyville and Holm Audio in Woodridge. The US importer/distributor is Brian with Pro Audio Ltd. I’ll add there is an individual, Rodney, in Janesville Wisconsin selling grey market discounted Puritan products, no warranty. I’d steer clear of that proposition.

My plan is to try the Puritan in my tube system first. Specifically, I am curious to hear its impact with my preamplifier, and DSD Mk I and Theta Data Transport. I have my doubts as far as its impact with the cj Premier 11A and Genesis Servo Amplifier.

The LHY-SW8 is literally on ice at it is resting in our seasonal home, (as is the P15).
I may insert the Puritan in my den system, which is nothing special, Hegel H120, and Innuos Zen Mk3.

Once the repair is complete I’ll report out.

My CJ gear likes the P12.

My M1200’s definitely like the P12.
