Thanks! I’ll put it in tomorrow and let it run for a few days before I listen more closely.
ACME Silver Cyro fuse has been in BHK pre for the entire day, and I was not planning to give an early review. But I was quite surprised how similar it sounds compared to Purple on the first day. If I do a blind test, I am not sure which one I will like better. ACME has less than 250 hours at this point so it should continue to improve.
This fuse has been around for a long time, and no one is talking about it. I bet if it is selling at 10 times higher, they will be well known. To me, it has better tonal accuracy than Purple in my system, and my system also sounded richer.
I will bring back Purple on the weekend, and I have a feeling the Purple fuse will face stiff competition.
I’ve concluded that the ACME certainly is a great tube, especially at its really low price, but it does not replace the Purple or M-1 for me in my system. I was marveling at the Purple that I installed a few days ago in my SEWE300B in place of the ACME but missing a little bass and treble ease. Decided to reverse it in the fuse holder today–voila! Great sound right now, wanting for nothing. (And of course it is still settilng in).
That is good to know. I think ACME fuse has broken in since I do not hear much difference for the last couple of days.
So, I will switch back to Purple tomorrow. I just purchased a few DSD256 music files (HDTT has 15% sales on now), and I will use them to compare.
I replaced the ACME Silver Cyro fuse with Purple a couple of hours ago because ACME has made no additional SQ improvement since this afternoon.
Again, these two fuses sounded very similar. But I agree Purple does sound better in my system too. I still feel the ACME gaves a bit fuller sound than Purple. However, Purple gives quite a bit better inner details and a cleaner sound than ACME, especially on treble and higher mid. But I wonder if Purple will fit all systems with its “strength”. The pronounced treble details and cleaness could be too pronounced for some speakers. In my system with the mixtures of M-1 and Master fuses, the Purple enhances the overall SQ. I like it quite a bit more than ACME now.
Overall I feel ACME may be more “user friendly”. But in the right system (a warmer sounding system for example), Purple could bring in a better balance.
But if I want to pick a favorite fuse, I will select AM M-1. To me it is still the most balanced sounding fuse that I have tried. On a side note. SR Master fuse seems to over-correct the short-coming of Purple (thinner and colder SQ). One Master fuse will balance two or more Purples in a system I believe. Two may overwhelm the system to the warmer side too much. I also found the placement of 2nd Master fuse could be tricky. But ACME fuse does not have that issue, I believe.
Keep in mind that I am in a long-term break in on the ZenWave PSR-11 power cord that will take another two months! So, all my comments on SQ improvement has to come with some grain of salt.
I too really really like the M-1 and find that a balance of Purple and M-1 works for my system well. I would put an M-1 in this amp instead of Purple perhaps, but the M-1 is just a bit too thick for the fuse holder that the amp uses and it breaks the plastic clip (I learned that from another component). It can still work, but is a bugger to get out and I don’t like the broken clip aspect.
I haven’t tried a Master and won’t until and unless a ship comes in (that I haven’t set sailing yet, and probably won’t ever). But I like the mixture I have right now with the tube complements I favor.
