Best HDMI Cable: Dragon 48. v. Nordost Valhalla

Of course! No where near most of you. I just have it in a home theater. McIntosh MX180 processor, PS Audio M1200 mono amps, Martin Logan 15As and 34C LCR. Martin Logan Balanced Force 212 subs x3. XTF200 surrounds x 4. All on P20s with Cardas Clear reflection everything.

So good, but maybe not great.

Nice system!

FWIW, most of the tongue wagging w/r/t the Dragon HDMI cable involves its use for I2S sources.

Doesn’t seem like that is what you are using it for…

It takes weeks for the cable to damage your brain enough that you finally prefer it. Same thing with digital sound.

When I started using the Dragon 48 hooked up to my MX150 it took a month to like its sound best in the end it was most natural for HDMI sound. . Picture was immediate. This was after using cable as i2S source over a year. The HDMI pinout is different than i2s sound. Silver takes time to brak in at least 300 hours.

Thanks and nope. So I guess we will see

Todays update: nice! Little too much extension but everything is behaving and sounds good. Not blowing me away but good! Maybe this weekend I will swap my other cable back in and do a comparison…still dont think it is better

Bretherin…

Please take the following with a grain of salt…this is in accord to a few things:

  1. I do HT and not music. My attention is on the movie, not eyes closed on the system.
  2. I am using less revealing, less capable gear than most of you with your hifi systems. I believe I have the best for HT! But it is NOT a hifi system.
  3. Changing cables in my system is a REAL PAIN. I do it because I have to and am crazy, but it sucks the whole time, so going back and forth a zillion times isnt on my to do list.

Now…
The Dragon…

Has been slayed!!!
Shes going back. I put in a friends RAL today and liked it much less than Dragon. Dragon was great by comparison, more of everything. Then I put in a Valhalla, which is no slouch! But no dragon. Actually I started to like the Dragon a lot!

Then I put in my Wegryzn. All the bass. All the extension. All the fullness, all the body. All the detail, depth, soundstage.

ALL THE ENJOYMENT. It all came back. Immediately

For those of you who are married, maybe IF you held out, or gave another girl a chance, you could have found a 100% perfect woman.

But for those of you happily married and in love with you imperfect wife, because she is yours, I’m with you.
Translated to cables…maybe in 300 more hours the Dragon would rule all!!!
But I am happy, so so happy. Happy enough that, if there is better, for $150, this cable is more capable than I will ever need. If it broke I would buy a Dragon right away. But I sit here typing listening to a CRAP Bond film from the 70s in a trance. Because the magic of my system…is back.

Dragon slayed!

That’s all that counts, TiBone. Your ears, your system.

Thank you for being so kind Tony. I hope I didnt come off as saying the Dragon isnt any good. Its just not for me…especially not for thousands of dollars.

That was not a surprise! I have tried AQ Vodka, Coffee, Firebird, and Dragon for my HT system. I settled with AQ Coffee for HT, because there was really NO improvement from using Firebird and Dragon.

However, I heard clear difference among all the HDMI cables from above in my two channel audio system.

A perfectly legitimate conclusion.

Please provide some more specific information (make and model) about this HDMI cable, if you don’t mind. I am not familiar with the brand (model?).

I am always on the lookout for bang-for-the-buck kit and my HT system has some room for newer and better HDMI cables. (Not to mention the fact that it might be fun to try this cable as an I2S conduit).

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for sharing your journey, it has been fun to follow it these past few days. Interesting that Dragon took the #2 spot over the Nordost.

Any additional thoughts about the Dragon48 being 8K compatible, unlike the Wegryzn? It seems the Wegryzn is 4K HDMI 2.0 only.

Except I DO hear a difference in my HT. If I had never heard the Wegryzn, I would have been sold on the Dragon. But mind you, all HTs are different so I dont knock ya if thats where your improvements stopped. At least you can admit it!

Its out of production. No email response. No audiogon ads. Phone number doesnt even work.

5N silver, 22 AWG. 19 Conductors. Its AMAZING! (In my system)
Largely because, while it does all the ā€˜things’ we talk about, it also just sounds like tubes and vinyl. Goooooood!

Thanks man, thats a real compliment!

Nordost was a good cable, but also a let down? I was hoping for a tighter race, but I don’t think Nordost is as invested in HDMI as AQ
(For the record, if you buy a Cardas HDMI, it sounds about the same as a Valhalla. Both are 24awg silver plated x19. Actually think the Cardas is better but Cardas punches WAYYYY above its league.)

I use just audio out with these cables to 8K or 1080P both require very very little bandwidth.

Quote. ā€œI put in a friends RAL today and liked it much less than Dragon. ā€œ

The RAL does not pass HDMI video. I take it you’re only using audiophile cables as eARC. I pass video and audio to my HT processor with the Dragon

Looks like you have found the best cable for your HT system. Return the Dragon and save the $.

My HT is a simple B&W Formation bar/bass that is not hi-resolution for sure. The whole setup is cheaper than one of the power cords for my audio system.

I am surprised that I could hear/see a bit difference from changing cables at all.

With respect, I have said a few times its running audio only from 4k player to processor. Video goes straight to TV via another HDMI
