Let me check when I get home. I’ll get back to you.
I could be wrong, but I think it’s because the player software on your computer (JRiver or Amarra or Audirvana or Foobar, etc, etc.) already decoded the problematic file and applied its own error correction before sending it out the USB port.
Or if you are using a hardware player such as the SoTM SMS-200 or the Sonore Micro/Ultra rendu, it already did the same thing before sending it out its USB port.
Then all your DS has to do is accept the corrected data going into its USB port, so it plays without any ticks or pops.
In which case, perhaps the Bridge is unforgiving of DSD files that have some errors, which for me is a good thing. I know that I have properly ripped my own SACDs if my Bridge plays them flawlessly. And if I hear any ticks or pops, then I must re-rip the SACD again. ![]()
Perhaps you are right.
But I just checked my Roon configuration for Bridge and USB, and they are identical.
A conundrum…
Same here. I’m also using Roon. DSP off, of course, for bit-perfect playback and verified by playing these files.
I have purchased and ripped around 1,500 SACDs over the years to DSD64. I have listened to around half of them with Roon through Snowmass and Bridge 3.6.17 on my DS and none of them so far have any ticks nor pops.
I could be wrong, but perhaps your case isn’t caused by a problem with your PS Audio hardware nor firmware, but by some errors in the DSD64 file itself.
Could you try re-ripping your SACD?.
^ So, would I not have the same problem playing the file?
I’ve performed some more tests. My results and the feedback from others make me think is it’s not the file. Here’s why:
- If I turn on Roon’s DSP and convert DSD64 to PCM 88.2 I do not get any ticks when playing the file. Doesn’t that tell us the file is not corrupt?
- When playing the file without conversion (i.e, DSD) I get ticks. Yet when I stop playback after hearing a tick, rewind 10 seconds or so and replay, there is no tick at the point it ticked originally. This indicates some randomness to the issue. If the file was corrupt, wouldn’t the tick at the same point every time it was played?
- The file plays back fine using other hardware (eg Linn Akurate DSM above) indicating the file is not corrupt.
- The file plays back fine using BridgeII & DS Dac (eg Peanut_Butter above) indicating the file is not corrupt.
- No ticks occur when the file is played back via USB on the same player/hardware where clicks occur when playing via Bridge .
- For me, the issue occurs playing nearly all DSD files played by Roon to the Bridge. Not just rips, but commercially purchased music from NativeDSD Music for example. In fact, when testing this issue when a new OS or Bridge firmware is released, I only use non-ripped files to rule out bad rips as a cause.
- I get the occasional tick when playing this 2L sample DSD64 track: http://www.lindberg.no/hires/test/2L-145/2L-45_stereo_01_DSF_2822k_1b.dsf
- I have never, ever heard a tick during play of a FLAC file. If I turn on Roon’s DSP and convert PCM to DSD64, I hear the occasional tick during playback.
This issue has been reported over a long period of time by many users.
Are there any other tests I can perform to convince PS Audio that there is an issue with DSD playback to the BridgeII - especially (but not exclusively) when played using Roon?
Since installing Snowmass on my DSD Snr, I have to say that the instance of ticks during playback of DSD files has reduced considerably to the point where it doesn’t bother me.
I’m just trying to help PS Audio by doing some debugging
Regards
Mark
If the issue only involves using Roon to the Bridge then it would seem to me that Roon is as equally at fault as PSA. Have you raised this issue on their forum?
I had pops day one with Roon DSP on so I converted to PCM, then I turned Roon DSP off. I listen to dsf files from Nucleus+ with zero clicks or pops in 2 weeks. We sorted through this 2nd day beta testing.
I stream mostly SACD ISO from jRIver via Bridge II on Snowmass now.
Before this latest Bridge there was always ticks and pops, I could still tolerate just took it as vinyl sound
I update the Bridge this morning, wow the pops and ticks reduce to min which I’m so happy about.
But later on i find the sudden break at the end of each track right before it ends, then it continues for the rest of 1 sec or so of the track and keeps going on
I haven’t mentioned the clicks/ticks on the Roon forums. As I mentioned in an earlier post “I also played the track back from another PC running Minim Server and BubbleUPnP. I used MConnect to send the file direct to the Bridge.
I got the occasional tick again, but less frequent.”
Non-Roon users have also reported the issue, including delillotelfer above.
Hi cardri. Are you saying a workaround for the issue is to:
- Turn Roon DSP on and convert DSD64 to (say) 88.2 PCM
- Then turn Roon DSP off.
Have I got that right?
Cheers!
Excellent detective work, Mark.
The conclusion from your analysis is clear : it is a bridge 2 bug.
@Paul: can PS Audio please look into this?
This reasoning should make it pretty clear.
While it may seem correct, and perhaps it is, it’s always a little more complicated than what it may seem. If we can duplicate it we can then declare it a bug. It’s not always easy to duplicate.
@markus46 - I got pops when I downloaded snowmass (beta tester) and never had pops with redcloud. I switched the SRC (Sample Rate Conversion) from DSD to PCM and pops reduced; however, did not go away. I then turned off the SRC and have not heard any pops since (2 weeks after 2nd day of beta testing).
Thank you for your response, Paul.
Hopefully, it will be easy to check.
You just need to play a few dsd files through bridge 2, preferably through Roon.
What do you mean by turning off SRC? In Roon? Can you be more specific about turning SRC off?
The Roon zone called SRC (Sample Rate Conversion). In Roon, each DSP function has a zone… This is the 2nd zone, right below Headroom Management. I let the PSA gear work this end by disabling the SRC. I made this remark to sangwoohahn the 2nd day of beta testing, might want to IM him (assume him) about the details. There was a lot going on during beta testing.
Hi. I am new to this forum so please bear with me. I have not read al the posts in this thread so my apologies if I have missed it but since upgrading my DS to Snowmass my Bridge II has disappeared. I get 0.0.0 as the firmware and rolling back to the previous firmware has not made any difference.
Could anyone assist?
Not at all sure what is going on here but have you tried power cycling the DAC to see if it then is discoverable? When you say “firmware,” do you mean the Bridge II code is showing 0.0.0?
