Burning In New Power Regenerators

Not too often…perhaps once a week to “freshen things up”…

Here is an interesting true happening…

For the past several months my incoming thd had risen
significantly from 2% to 4+% and outgoing thd from .01
to .03 and had to adjust by resetting the phase tune to 5
in order to bring down the outgoing thd back to .01…

Well a couple of days ago the city’s power transformer
across the road from me blew up!! Kaboom…

So the city came out to replace the transformer. In so’
doing they had to replace the incoming feed line as it was
shot. 40 year old equipment. When the original supply cable
was pulled it was so corroded and disgusting…amazing
that it worked at all up to that point.

So now with the new transformer with supply cable incoming
thd is back down to 2% again…who would have known
the former increase in thd was related to this.

I know this was off topic but of interest to read (hopefully)
anyway…

Best wishes

Interesting, thanks for sharing!

A warning on restarting, this morning, half asleep, I thought I was turning off the switch in the front, but apparently I was turning it on, so when I then turned off the switch in the back, I blew the fuse! Luckily, I have a backup I can use, but was wondering if this will do:

Hey pal you ain’t alone…I’ve done worse by plugging a very rare
RCA 6u8 tube into a 12ax7 socket…hah eeeny eeeny tiny
sparklers went off just like the 4th of july inside that 6u8!!!

No damage to my pre but what a send off good bye
to that rare tube…

Yikes!

Do you have any thoughts about how the fuse in a regenerator affects sound quality? In a regenerator it is there to only protect the unit from overload, so I am curious how different fuses (or their directionality) affect sound quality. I read in one of these threads that Paul is unsure of differences, using different fuses in regenerators.

George my take is that fuses as a gateway through which all
the power flowing into our systems must go through. When the
flow through resistance is lowered as in these specialty fuses the results
are improved dynamics…ebb and flow of the electrical current as music
places dynamic demands on it…

If you are a hotrodder one of the first things a rodder does is to toss
the restrictive exhaust system and replacing with high flow headers and
cats mufflers and of course exhaust pipes…netting a more responsive
engine. From there a higher flow upper and lower air intake system
for the engine allowing the engine to “breathe better” compared to the
same engine in stock trim. :innocent:

The regenerator aspect of this is as running bad gas pump vs quality
gas…as myself having pumped a bad batch of gas …my engine stumbles
and hesitates at a traffic light…with good gas all that goes away…

Hope this analogy helps

As Paul mentioned earlier, PP fuse only powers up the control unit - may have no impact on sound at all. The power to equipment comes through a thermal switch, there is no fuse.

Well…be that as it may…don’t go tell that to my former P12 and now
my new P15…“it will say are deaf mon ?”

I’ve heard fuse sonic differences in my P15. Right now I have an SR Blue in there. . . may replace that with an Audio Magic one of these days as I have those in many other components and really like them.

Which Audio Magic?

The “Super.”

One more little detail here that was overlooked is that the regenerators
analogue amps to which the chip sends the regenerated ac sine wave to
these analogue for them amps to amplify as ac current draw their power through
the main fuse…for these amps to draw current through the chip would
burn the chip to a crisp…

The fuse does make a big difference !!

Get the Audio Magic Ultimate Premier Beeswax SHD fuse. That’s the one I replaced the SR Orange fuse in my P20 with and I was quite surprise how much better it was. It does cost a little more but well worth it for the veil it lifted in the sound. And it’s non-directional.

You are most likely right! I think circuits are galvanically isolated though. Ears are the judges

How much is it?

$240 each. I get it from Cable Company and got a little discount and free shipping and no sales tax.

Or in my case, my wallet is the judge.

Exactly what I did. It still ships from Audio Magic but with discount applied throgh TCC.

I have since replaced the SR Orange with the Audio Magic and also upgraded the output transformers in my DS Sr. and my system has reached a level of performance I didn’t think possible!! So much more exciting to listen to!! In the overall scheme of things, it really wasn’t that expensive, cost wise compared to the benefits.
