DirectStream DAC MK2 MountainTop - Mount Massive

Thanks for sharing Paul!

I assume the higher harmonics in the Massive measurement are due to the higher level (0 dBV vs -9 dBV)?

Would you mind sharing the unweighted 20-20K dynamic range for Antero and Massive? Maybe it’s just me but it looks to me like Massive actually has a higher audible band noise floor.

Thanks,
Michael

By system reset do you mean factory reset?

Yes in sytems menu of MK2

Thank you, I’ll give it a try.

I did the system reset and the noise was barely audible, BUT began creeping up in level and after a couple of minutes its back to where it was before the reset. Aaaaarg

Looks like a good amount reduction, I’m not sure if I agree with noise in the weed statement for the harmonics though… but still great to see progress being made… albeit I believe this should be the release version. Still waiting for Mk1 vs. Mk2 noise to show data that prove Mk2 is quieter than Mk1. Thanks.

just received new Stereophile and the DS MK2 as reviewed is rated Class A , with an interesting explanation…

I’m not imposing that you were making a blanket statement, but just wanted to emphasize that not all negative viewpoints suggested a hatchet job. I found it more dismaying that he was using speakers that I actually own and have found to be not very resolving at this level of hifi. I find it a lot more difficult to resolve differences in wires and components on that speaker than on something closer to parity on cost.

It doesn’t invalidate his integrity or his observations; I always found it to be a bit childish to be suggesting an ulterior motive or some kind of conspiracy when it comes to someone who is a stalwart in the industry and has earned his respect. However, it is also true that I personally would be straining to hear a difference with those transducers and would want a better tool for evaluating differences between components, which I also feel like is a valid criticism.

Totally agree with you on the speaker thing, but I guess that’s their policy that reviewers have to review in their well understood system. I can see it I guess but I think that is too limiting but been that way forever with Sterophile I think. With any methodology there will be tradeoffs

Thats disappointing. It lasts a week or two for me. Perhaps rhe ground on your digital input you use is one not making contact and mine is on an input I don’t use.

With this DAC there is a lot of releasing and then “working out the bugs”
I had a MK2 and had no issues with it. At the same time my preference with such things is to have the bugs worked out before releasing it.
I’m not condemning I’m just stating my preference

Just curious. Are we talking about grounds lifted, or just plain factory settings?

Suppose nobody here who will disagree. Me being one of them. :slightly_smiling_face:

And to whom is that important to?

To a reviewer who always professed one should listen to a product before measuring it to avoid pre concieved bias.

No one is suggesting any ulterior motive.

You caught him the one time he has done this. I forgive him, and still trust him.

Well, my intent was to kvetch about the usage of the term, “hatchet job,” to describe the majority of posts that were critical of the JA review. I interpret the term, “hatchet job,” to imply that a review was written with ulterior motives, and would agree that almost nobody went there except in maybe one or two posts at most.

And what would these be, now that the subject is on the table and notably speculation can run wild?

Not sure what you mean? An unfounded attack on someone’s integrity and rampant speculation is precisely what I dislike, at least in this context.
