DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

I don’t think there will be any sonic benefit disabling wifi. We’ve really been careful with this.

There may someday be a web interface but no promises. The internal processor certainly has the horsepower but unsure what advantage it would bring.

@jamesh

Is there any feature/functionality that you haven’t received the feedback you need? I realize that there are issues you are tracking that are effecting feedback with some functionality. Aside from the known issues, is there something else you need?

I appreciate the “just use it” mantra, but if there is something, I’m game to poke at it.

120 hours of streaming now. Gregory Porter’s Be Good is where it’s at tonight. There’s that certain juiciness in the mids, tubey if you will, that I am striving towards with my system. I think in another 100 hours I am going to be so much closer to that goal. There’s other things I need to do, but DAC isn’t going to be one of them.

The change over the last 100 hours has been remarkable. Streaming all day to the MKII while I am at work and then sitting down after what amounts to 18 since my last listen is such a treat. I was really looking forward to listening tonight. It was worth the wait. I thought the last few days were positive gradual changes. Today something happened and there’s so much more presence. It’s like all the prior days gains times two.

Remarkable!

Vince,

I have a “live a little vicariously” request. If you can find the time (and don’t mind the music suggestion), please give Buddy Guy’s “Blues Singer” a spin with the best recording you can find via Roon (assuming you have the record’s files on hand or access to a version on Tidal or Qobuz).

It is one of my favorites for listening for quality reproduction of a truly (IMO) great piece of musical art by a national treasure.

Hope you can pull it off somehow, and let me know what you think.

Thanks and have fun.

Scott

PS

Apologies if I misremembered and you are not a “Roonie”.

Queued up in Roon Scott. I was just looking for what I was going to play next, great choice.

Well, now you have me in the mood. After Buddy Guy’s Blues Singer I just queued up a tasty DSD64 Muddy Waters Folk Singer.

You know how Buddy Guy hums along? He’s humming right here, right now.

Just finished the first track, and the humming just faded off, on my desktop system.

Crawlin’ Kingsnake is moaning along now. How is that low-key buzz and bass sounding on the MK II right now?

It’s all there, everything you want. The range of his voice, the snap of his guitar, the sense of them bopping along with one another, that bit of resonance you hear live is palpable.

It’s loud in here now, I keep turning it up and am digging it! The Blues is Alive and Well!

Coincidentally, I had just finished ordering a giant order of BBQ delivery when I saw your request. I couldn’t be happier, Blues and BBQ. Fantastic!

:yum: :yum: :yum: :no_mouth:

We’ve got a family that does a BBQ truck around here that is about the best I’ve had (and I’ve had a lot of BBQ!). Yum!

I just purchased a bundle of DSD256 downloads because they sounded so good in DS MK2, and I only had 48 hours of honeymoon with it before I had to ship it back.

Playing through DS is not even close. MK2 handles DSD256 and hi-resolution streaming so much better. But I only had luck in playing two SACDs and one CD in PST without stopping. So, I do not know if PST has improved as much after break in.

Has anyone played SACD and CD in PST or other SACD transport without issue?

Great album

Back to your regularly scheduled programming…. Need me an MKII

Haha

Thanks V.

I have played SACD’s CD’s Hi-rez Data DVD’s without issue as well as USB jump drive on repeat for break in. No issues.

Questions for beta testers - is there any difference between playing a flac file and converting it to WAV? On my mk I with bridge2 there is a big difference.

I was a little disappointed to read here the output is louder than the MK I. Maybe the volume control is more transparent than the MK1 which I keep at 100 for best sound.

Since I’m stuck with the clearly inferior MK1, I had to construct my own MKII.

It is stranger some Beta units do not have issues, and some have several types of stopping issues.

I think I will hook up our Oppo to it this weekend. It wasn’t my intention, but I do have several SACD that I ripped. It will be interesting to compare the two.

Hi and thanks for the excellent album recommendation. Enjoying it immensely right now. Nice add to Muddy’s Blues Singer album.

Vegetarian, so no BBQ for me…

It’s a vice. I may have several.

No issues here with playing SACD and standard CD thru PST to MKIl. Sounds great.

I’ve been running-in the MKII while i’v been at work pretty much every day since getting it, and every night it has been sounding better, except for last night and tonight. I noticed less clarity and just had the sense that something sounded off. Last night I chalked it off to being tired or perhaps not in the mood, but then tonight I noticed the same thing. I’m running usb from a Mac mini directly into the MKII so decided to restart my Mac, which instantly fixed the problem. All the magic was immediately back. I’ve had my DSJ connected to the same Mac for several years and have never had to perform a restart to fix a similar problem. So who knows what caused the problem, I just thought I would share the experience. Other than that I have had no issues with the MKII running USB or even I2S from my Matrix. The MKII sounds better without the Matrix by the way.
