DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

Thanks!

It’s easy enough to add additional names and something I’ll look at after the beta. I thought I had added PST and DMP, but apparently not. We had deliberately decided not to allow free-form names on the Strata back in the day due to memory contraints on that platform that don’t really apply any longer, so I can look into that as well (for those masochistic enough to want to enter names manually).

Altho I used ASIO with PS Audio USB for JRiver MC 29 last week, I’m not having much luck with it in JRiver MC right now either.

FWIW here’s what’s working at the moment for all rates (including 705.6k PCM and quad rate DSD) in JRiver MC

I also have bitstreaming on and everything turned off in ā€œā€¦ DSP & Output formatā€¦ā€:

Beyond that you probably want to get support for USB from PS Audio.

All, which USB driver should I be using? I found one in PSA download section and it seems to installed, but when I play audio through it, sounds like it’s under water.

The USB driver download has two separate drivers in it and instructions on how to install each. The newer (v2) driver is for newer DACs. Its name is PS Audio USB Audio Drivers_setup_WHQL_v2.

OK I used the correct one then… still I get broken audio coming through. Playing through JRiver.

I upgraded to 2.33 and no issues so far. I had one generic 2.0 usb not work and tried a second generic 2.0 usb and it worked. No issues playing or changing inputs. I have a PI2AES into one is2 and a Matrix2 into the other is2. There is a raspberry pi into the usb and a cd player into xlr1.

The sound is wonderful and will keep testing and listening. Will try to compare the MKII against the MKI again this weekend, since the ears have finally opened back up 40 days after testing positive for covid. Maybe l’ll try to throw the little Pre Box S2 Digital Dac

Thank you

These are the exact settings I am using. Tomorrow I am going to unbox the mk1 and see if the single rate files that I recently downloaded and suffer the droput issue works on that DAC.

OK, I think I sorted it out, I was having JRiver convert everything to 192k, and apparently that’s not compatible with driver, changing it to ā€œno changeā€ fixed it.

I’m having trouble with 24/96 file, the DSD Mk2 doesn’t detect the format change and stay at 44.1k, that was what I experienced earlier too, when I mentioned it’s like the music is underwater.

Edit: Can’t stream DSD64 either, JRiver reported the streaming, but DSD Mk2 still at 16/44.1, with green dot.

16/44.1 files play fine.

Edit2: Within Windows driver default I set it to 34/384 and that broke YouTube too, DSD Mk2 continue to stay at 16/44.1. If I set the windows driver default to 16/44.1, YouTube works.

So, to summarize… I don’t think USB format auto detect is working.

Firmware: 2.3.0
FPGA: 173-Beta 173
USB: 3.01.a605

My MKII is breaking in beautifully! Tonight it’s sounding better than any digital has ever sounded in my system, ever!

I got rid of the Matrix since going direct USB into the MKII handily outperformed the Matrix to I2S in my system. The Matrix added some grain and distortion I did not hear going straight into the USB input. The USB just sounded more natural and real! The USB input on the MKII has to be broken in as well, it’s sounding better every time I use it.

I compared my PST which uses the Dragon HDMI against my Esoteric streamer using the ChordMusic USB straight to the DAC with the Mo Fi Santana Abraxas SACD vs the ripped file and it wasn’t even close, The ripped file sounded like the Master tape and the SACD sounded like second generation tape! This MKII really did a number with this USB input to get it this good, although I am using a better source and cable with the USB. I believe all things being equal, the USB and I2S inputs are the same on the MKII, not like the MKI, which the USB input was really bad compared to it’s I2S input. Oh, and in my system, the Purple fuse brings out even more natural detail than the Audio Magic M1.

I also compared three fuses again. The AM M-1 fuse does not want to work with MK2 in my system. I do not know if it is because MK2 is not fully broken in yet, but with it the sound is less focused and too warm, and the soundstage is flatter. The stock fuse sounds better to me in fact.

I agree SR Purple continues to be the best match. The purple in MK2 shows more details, clearer image, and more holographic soundstage. I will put the M-1 fuse back into MK2 in a few weeks to see if it will improve.

Barry,
Thank you for that encouraging news. I would appreciate it if you could also include PWT along with PST and DMP as I still have and use a PWT along with my PST. It would make it worth it to than use the naming option for me. For now I2s 1 and I2s 2 works.

Switching back to I2S via the Matrix, format is automatically detected as expected, seamlessly switching between 24/96, DSD64, and 16/44.1, even 16/48

Will upgrade to 2.3.3 next

Firmware: 2.3.0
FPGA: 173-Beta 173
USB: 3.01.a605
Network: 0.0

Did a 2 step update:

  1. Updated to 2.3.3, nothing else
  • Connection: PC->Icron 2301->DSD USB Input
  • After reboot was able to jump from 44.1/16 to 96/24
  • Can’t go back to 44.1/16, DAC stuck at 96/24 (actually display shows 96/16)
  • See video here: PSA DSD MK2 stuck at 96/24 - YouTube
  1. Updated to FPGA 178 (firmware 2.3.3)

Current config:
Firmware: 2.3.3
FPGA: 178-Beta SS
USB: 3.02.a91f
Network: 1.1

What is the spec of the fuse on the MK2

It saves me the trouble to pull the fuse out from the back of the MK2

Thanks

Why do you need to pull the fuse? The rating is printed on the back of the unit

Small (5x20mm) 250v Slo-Blo 1A.

I have DAC MK II BETA UNIT:
My system :
Perfect Wave SACD over Is2
OPPO 205 over coaxial
OPPO 105 over optical
PS Audio BK Pre Amp
Perfect Wave DAC MKIIBeta
Carver 275 Tube Amp
B&W 702S2 floor standing speakers
Various high end cable for connections
PS Audio power chords on all units
PS Audio Power Regenerators for all units

The DAC MKII BETA has played flawlessly right out of box.
Set up simple
Instructions easy to follow.
I like the front panel as is - it tells just what I need to know.
It is a beautiful work of art to behold with My SACD sitting on top - twins perfectly matched.

The sound is amazing - prior to this I used a Stellar GainCell DAC pre amp , then used my DAC JR when I got the BK Pre Amp - for comparison.
The DAC MK II. Is an amazing improvement.

The sound of SACD DSD over IS2 through the DAC MKII is the best sound I have ever heard - listening to music since 1960’s.
The sound is crystal clear , alive , expansive dynamic range , with all instruments and voices in a 3 D space with no sense of floor or ceiling or back. Each instrument has a better sense of its own space . From lows to highs - all are better .

CD inputs using The OPPO is better the expected ( and I expect a lot.) I never knew CD’s could sound so good, full, with a depth and fullness of range and clarity
I play rock, jazz, classical , folk.

This is music I know very well and it sounds new, better , more detailed , alive , with a clarity I have never heard before . Sounds and feels brand new yet familiar at the same time .

I have a VPI Prime Turntable and PS Audio Phono PreAmp. I played same LP’s as SACD’s for comparison.
SACD’s through the DAC MKII over IS2 sound as close to analog I have heard on a digital source but with much wider dynamic range , greater clarity and sound stage of being live but having a lot of analog’s warmth , feelings and sensitivity.
I feel an emotional response inside me to the music from the DSC MKII like I have never felt before .

I listen to music for it plays to heart and soul, amplifies and stimulates my emotions and feelings , creating a deep sense of pleasure and satisfaction.

The DAC MKII has enhanced everything I l love and enjoy about listening to music.

I can recommend it without any reservations .
