Is it advisable given the troubles so far to be patient and wait on updating our Jr?
So far I don’t see any ongoing operational troubles: It’s not convenient to downgrade to Yale then upgrade to Huron, but it’s only twice the “upgrade work.” The issue with USB above still is likely to be solvable with at most powering the DAC and PC off at the same time.
So, pick your level of pain. You can listen sooner by recognizing that you may have to upgrade twice to get there.
Downgraded to Yale and re-upgrade to Huron, the music is back, my USB source is a Aurender, so no reboots needed.

FWIW - I understand that this is not the preferred path, for PS Audio or its users. But once you know that the simple upgrade does not work for you, shifting to the downgrade-then-upgrade process could not have been any easier. Really. 10 minutes extra and all is well.
In one guy’s opinion, from the perspective of user pain, once you know what to do, it’s just not a big deal. Pain? I think “minor inconvenience” is a more accurate description. It’s easy peazy.
For what’s worth I just encountered the same issue. Could not load Huron directly on my DSJ via brand new USB stick (FAT32) that contained only 4 Huron files in root. Blue light blinked twice following cold start and then went into normal boot up procedure. Read Torreys each time. Followed instructions to revert to Yale. Following confirmation of successful install of Yale I repeated steps to load Huron. Success!
Go figure.
A sonic tour de force!
Many thanks for your expertise and hard work.
I’ve just followed the procedure and updated to Huron without issues. My first impression: cleaner sound. I only have my DSJ a couple of weeks so it is an interesting observation. Since I plugged in the first time (with Torreys) I love the sound. Wide, warm and more analogue than the Linn Akurate DS/1 I had before. If there was one point of critic that I could think of it was that the high frequencies were not as clean as with the Linn. My B&W 802 Diamonds are really revealing in the treble. Make no mistake about it: I would never go back to the clean but also sterile Linn sound. But with Huron this ‘flaw’ disappeared. I think it is a big improvement.
Unfortunately I have to fly to Japan now for a business trip. More feedback on the sound in the weekend.
A nice detail is that the display shows more info next to the volume:
The R for Roon changed into an Asterix. Any reason for that?
Ted Smith saidI formatted USB stick using Disk Utility. Copied the Huron firmware files on to the USB. Powered on DSJ. Blue light flashed, it took a while for the process to run, when the DSJ booted it is reporting Torreys. When people say that Huron didn’t load was it that the Blue light never started blinking or that it took forever (the Blue light blinks longer now than it used to, but not “forever”)
Out of curiosity, of those who had problems with loading Huron, which version of Torreys were you on before?
The downgrade path is not working either. I tried installing Yale etc etc DSJ reporting Torreys.
I am stuck on Torreys with no upgrade or downgrade option.
Obviously my DSJ has a problem. It didn’t work ex factory. It took considerable effort from Dennis to eventually get it going. My DMP didn’t work ex factory either, required intervention from Dennis to get that going also.
“My” Huron hasn’t loaded either. Will follow the back to Yale + re-try Huron path and report to you gents.
I had the common issue of failing to update to Huron from Torreys. DSJr just booted up as if the memory stick was not installed (it was). Followed the workaround of going back to Yale, which I never had before, and then Huron. Worked as expected and has been reported by others. Yes, it took a couple extra steps, but in the end, I’m in Huron town.
Little time to listen last night, but I am hearing much the same as others have reported on the other thread for the DSSr. More space, more detail, and a much more natural presentation. One of my long-time “go to” tracks is Easy Money on Rickie Lee Jones first release for Warner Brothers. Lots of different instrument sounds portrayed in a space that’s not so different in size from my listening room so the illusion is reinforced by a realistic acoustic. Instruments sounded more real and Rickie Lee’s voice sounded more “in the room” rather than at a microphone. One of my tests is how clearly the lyrics can be heard, as Ms. Jones sometimes sounds like she’s singing and enjoying taffy at the same time. The clarity was the best I’ve ever heard. Also, cymbals on this track sometimes sound overly splashy, and at the very end of the tune, mushy; more like noise trailing off. With Huron, I’m hearing more realistic, or at least more believable sounds.
Detail is markedly improved over anything I’ve heard before. The keyboards and guitar have so much nuance floating around that I was both grinning and marveling. I’ll take more time in the coming days to trot out some of my warhorse recordings to find out what else has been encoded and masked for so long by my equipment. Bottom line? A) I’m thrilled with Huron!!! B) This is a heck of a lot of fun.
Finally, I’ve long wondered why RLJ first release has never been remastered for digital. I’m using the original WB CD, from back in the days when audiophiles were blasting Red Book for their affront to music and abysmal sound. Maybe it doesn’t need to be remastered, as I’ve found it, and especially Easy Money, to be wonderfully recorded and reproduced, but the labels tend to want to sell you the same stuff over and over. This record seems a natural. It has been re-released on LP, multiple times I think, but would be a great choice for hi-res, updated CD, MQA…whatever!
Your pal, Chris
christophervalle said I’ve long wondered why RLJ first release has never been remastered for digital.Because it is a recording with excellent sound, recorded in the late '70's to analog with excellent dynamic range, recorded and mastered by skilled professionals (including Roger Nichols as a recording engineer, and mastering by Lee Herschberg - who also mastered Sinatra's My Way and other superb sounding recordings) and later simply transferred to CD. It is a recording which would be very difficult to make better.

It sounds like you are getting an error when trying to read the upgrade files from the USB stick. It is not able to read the new PIC code, hence you are stuck on Torreys. Try reforematting your USB stick. Make sure your USB stick formatted FAT16 or FAT32? exFAT will not work. Also make sure to use the OS to eject the USB stick from your computer after you copy the files. If the blue light flashed more that 2 or 3 times, then some of the files loaded but obviosly not your PIC code. If you still have issues, email me directly at dennis@psaudio.com

The R changed to an asterix because I had enough room to spell out Roon, and the asterix means Locked.

Just finished the upgrade to Huron. I was forced to go the Yale route. I tried going directly to Huron but was left still with Torreys after the upgrade. I then went the long route (Torreys -> Yale -> Huron).
To Brodricj please note that the default reformat via OSX Disk Utility is MAC OS Extended Journaled format. You have to specifically change the format option to MSDOS FAT. Possibly that is your problem??
I was looking into the Torreys vs Huron files for possible answers. One thing I noticed is that the file USBL0021.HEX is the exact same file in both Torreys and Huron. Checksum is identical for both and both are time stamped March 4, 2015 1:52PM. Where as the same file in Yale is time stamped September 17, 2016. However with the identical checksum value again. Is it possible that the software loader is checking date/times of files to determine what to do and for whatever reason decides not to do what it needs to do if files are the same date/time? Just a WAG here. As the files appear to be identical in content that really doesn’t make much sense but …
One last comment, I read somewhere in this thread that it isn’t so painful to upgrade with the extra step. We shouldn’t assume what people’s home installations look like. My upgrade involved lying on the floor, placing a mirror behind the PSJ, pointing a flashlight at the mirror, and trying to work out a reverse image to put the stick in the slot. Not once, but three times. If all insertions were that hard I might not have had a son.
I just upgraded to Huron straight from Torreys with no problem at all.
Very straight forward. My DSj came loaded with Torreys. Have to do
some work now, will listen critically tonight. Noticeably darker background.
Very excited. Thanks Ted and the PS Audio team.
rayk saidYes the USB has to be formatted MSDOS FAT. Our Bootloader does not look at the date/time of files it is loading, just the name and if the checksum is valid.Just finished the upgrade to Huron. I was forced to go the Yale route. I could also not load Huron over torreys, but it worked to update to Huron over Yale.
Thank you very much Paul and Ted for the free update.
Best Regards from Sweden.
Tried updating the Huron from Torreys following the proper procedure and could not update - it’s like DSJr didn’t recognize the USB as it would start up as usual when fully powered on.
Installed Yale without a problem and then Huron thereafter with it being stable.
Loving the new options available especially with the display.
Thank you PS Audio team!
