DMP Interim update code

When you add the new code you shouldn’t be surprised if you hear a voice: Brodric, should you choose/decide to accept update code #****
As always, should you or any of your family be injured or killed, property destroyed within a 50 mile radius, P. S. A. disavow any knowledge of your actions. This DMP player will self-destruct in five/ten seconds. Good luck, Brodric.

I and others wait with bated breath…!:grinning:

Destruction within 50 mile radius, sounds like something of atomic proportions. And today is 7th August…hmmm, I’ll leave it for others to try first.

Paul has said he was aware of problems before he approved its release, but he was unaware of the difficulty of the fix. The truth of the matter didn’t come out until after the horse had bolted. So yeah, he wasn’t fully aware when the decision was made to release it, and he has apologized for that.

And about reviewers. I tar them all with the same brush. It took me literally moments to realize the DMP had serious flaws. How any one of these flaws could escape the attention of the reviewers…or rather escape the mention of reviewers, because problems should have been blatantly obvious and grabbed their attention, they just didn’t tell their readers about it. Anyway, we’re covering old ground here again, for the umpteenth time…I look forward to seeing the product of all this re-writing effort. I trust I won’t be disappointed, because they’ve had time to get it right.

You are right. I apologize. I should not have spoke so quickly.

I read all the reviews of the DMP including those from the major magazines like Stereophile and TAS, but I don’t remember any of the the reviewers mentioning anything about operating problems with this transport.

I mainly use my DMP to play my SACD collection with my DS DAC, but most of the time, I listen to music with my dedicated music server, so these problems aren’t as irritating to me as they might be to some who use the DMP exclusively to play their music.

My hope is that the main operating problems with the DMP are resolved soon and owners like myself who put our hard earned money into the DMP can just focus on the great sound of the DMP without having to deal with the playback issues which somewhat cripples our enjoyment of this great product.

Brodric - I agree - and your first post of the two would explain the second, and is consistent with Paul being led to believe by their former coder that any operational issues would be an easy fix. So that’s what I would have told the reviewers - there will be FW updates to address any of that stuff, so focus on the sound. Assume it will work as well as any disc spinner, but will also have these other cool features…

The way a review should work, the reviewer writes everything of relevance, warts and all. The manufacturer gets the opportunity to respond. For example, Reviewer: “I pressed play on the gizmo and it didn’t play”. Manufacturer responds: “We are aware the play button on our gizmo doesn’t work, a software update that fixes the play button will be released next week”…or whatever. Or you could just not submit the gizmo for review until the play button works.

Yup. In a perfect world. And the Gummint should represent the Governed, etc. I suspect there’s some coziness and back-scratching going on as in many business situations. It often has the normalcy factor of friendliness and “the way things are done”.

I’m not sure what I would’ve done in the reviewers’ shoes. Do I torpedo this high-end device that makes awesome sound from a company I respect? And deal with the inevitable blowback? But then, I’m not a professional reviewer.

The reviewer has a primary obligation to the readers, the people who pay to read what was written, and not the manufacturer.

This has turned into systemic hypothesizing.

Kind of a definition of a lot of forums ; )

Again - agreed. But what about the advertisers? The magazines wouldn’t survive without them.

NordicBob,

Well said! I hope that, when the final version of the DMP firmware is available, PS Audio will be able to sell us the memory card.

This is the absolute truth. The advertisement income is essential to the survival of any “print” magazine. How else can these beautifully printed copies be manufactured and then sent to our doorsteps for $5 a copy with a subscription. That doesn’t even take into account all of the free to read content online that these publishers make no extra money from the subscribers - just advertiser income. The magazine has to appease both its readership and advertisement partners.

We love making stuff up and then arguing who is right.

That is crazy to let it sit in a box. If yours has a problem that makes it unusable why don’t you send it back to PS Audio?

I certainly hope PS Audio doesn’t implement “Close and Play”. Not something I want or need.

Not close and play, it is close, read and ready for play. Nothing will play unless you press play at some point, whether the tray is open or closed when you press play.

Because they promised, when I complained about it, the software update will fix it. And I was happy with that assurance. It was my choice not to return it. I can wait.
