I keep all versions of firmware on the card in folders as you describe and place the individual files of the desired firmware on the root of the card when swapping firmware. It works perfectly in every piece of PS Audio equipment I have. But I do not recommend this to others as many will get confused.
Worked. But now have to take the wife out to brunch, so initial playback will have to wsait. Hopefully there is a sonic improvement to SACDs. The recent updates for the DAC have inversely effected SACD SQ IMHO.
My issue has up until now been a popping noise that I hear when playing SACD at startup…If that is eliminated i am in ,if not I will wait for the final product. What concerns me is reading people describe issues while playing the CD’s such as pausing and having to open the draw etc…that isnt worth an update for me…yet!
I never had any notification of new code since I did the beta, so I’m sort of guessing I had the yet older original iteration of the FW, which could account in part for how sluggishly mine functioned. When did the prior (to the other day) iteration come out?
First of all that popping is the DAC not the DMP. The second thing is that the improvement is sound quality makes this update special. Yes there are some bugs. But for me they are corner case and not a show stopper. I am extremely impressed at the improvement in the sound quality. This was a no brainer for me. YMMV.
well, perhaps but i only hear the popping sound when i play and SACD and never when I play the DAC without an SACD…in addition, when I spoke to the techs at PS Audio several times i was told this was a known issue with the memory player and they were working on a fix…
Just got my DMP updated. Didn’t know there was a update until I check the forum. Didn’t get a chance to play with it yet. But does anyone know what Clear SS mean. It’s on the menu to the right of Connections: —? It has a red circled x.
Call me crazy. 1.94 sounds better than 2.08 on my rig. I missed 2.06.
Put 2.08 in, checked, it was there. Hit play. No no no. Seemed more two dimensional and wrong. Back to old load, which was 1.94. Better. Darn.
Crazy how interactive all this stuff is. I’m guessing it’s system-dependent.
I have developed an inherent mistrust of any initial impressions I get of…just about anything, until I can sort out Why it might be happening, and If I can come up with some sort of valid means of comparing it with something else. Unfortunately, that is typically so difficult, time-consuming and fraught a course, that I don’t really have the patience for it.
I would just like to have a better understanding of WHY and HOW this could make a difference in SQ.
Could have been me, as I’ve been away from the stereo for a week… but my reaction was immediate. “No. Not good.” On a CD I like a lot and listen to more than others. Sounded more 2 dimensional, more midrange etch on voice. Put back 1.94. Ahh. “That’s right.”
Next I’ll try the cleanwave on the P10s. Only did that once long ago. Voodoo?
badbeef, not sure when the last beta version of the DMP firmware was, but I have four versions from November 2016 and one from December 2016. I want to say Paul said 1.94 was the one he approved for public release of the DMP. At some point last year I noticed 2.06, but never downloaded it. I believe I somehow figured out it was released in January 2017, but there wasn’t an “announcement”. I hope to load the latest this afternoon, but it has been a busy weekend.
I can’t believe how much trouble some people seem to be having–trouble with their guzintas and their guzoutas, matching this and that and this and that don’t work properly… I’m feeling so lucky that since any of my PSA products arrived, I’ve had nothing but pure pleasure with them. Depending on mood, I can hook up my 20 watt solid state amp or my zillion year old 40 watt tube amp or my 2 watt tube amp and all my children are playing perfectly together. And I don’t even feel the need to “knock wood” because these things remind me of my old Porsche 911; built by passionate engineers who are absolutely not driven by building to a price. And like the 49 year old 911, my son will get them when I’m done.
PS—let’s start a petition to get the Powerbase back–just the mechanical part is ok.
Thanks guys - interesting. I don’t recall ever updating my DMP’s FW since the beta. Nor do I recall anyone suggesting I do so, despite my bitching about the functionality. But hey, I woke up this morning, and I must’ve blacked out, because it was suddenly an hour later, and I have no memory of it
Bob - I have to admit to thinking it sounded better, but I know how a dB or two can bias your perception of SQ, hence my hesitance to weigh in on the side of “it’s better sounding”. Not to mention the how-could-it-be thing. But that’s down to my ignorance. Though Paul and Matt apparently, did not expect it. Sadly, I now have no idea what FW I was running, so I can’t do any meaningful comparisons, short of doing an exhaustive beta test of any prior versions. But I’m mixing an album and getting ready to sell my house, so…
JSYK - any of you who have done so (found it to sound better) - I do not doubt your perceptions/experiences. One of the things that has come out of all this DS DAC-update (and so forth) thing is that it’s not set in stone what the result will be for all users. Fun Stuff! We are fortunate people.
My 2.08 download won’t download. I’ve tried on two separte SD cards, and tried multiple times, and the firmware listed on the screen remains 2.06. Any suggestions what might be going wrong, or what I might be doing wrong? I’ve never had any problem downloading firmware in the past.
Are you installing the files in the root directory of the SD card? Some have failed to update when they put the files in a sub directory on the SD card. You also have to power cycle the unit from the back panel switch. Mine updated flawlessly this way.
Thanks for writing. I definitely powered the unit off and on again from the back panel switch. Not sure about the root- v. sub-directory issue — the choice wasn’t offered in any explicit way when I downloaded the files — but I did copy and paste the files directly from the download onto the card, as I’ve done in the past with previous firmware upgrades. One possible clue is that the initializing process started immediately after I powered the unit back on, rather than after a couple of minutes…I’m not sure what that signifies, but it’s the only thing that functioned differently from the way the download is supposed to proceed.
reformat the card and start over. make sure the dmp is off before inserting the card. also hit the eject button before taking the card out of the computer
When I downloaded the files they came in a sub directory. If you just copied the sub directory to the SD card then that is your issue. You have to unzip the files and copy just the files from the sub directory on to the SD card for the update to happen.
