DMP Interim update code

Well, with more time spent on 2.08…I can now say that with my ears, system, and tastes there is some type of high frequency veiling and lack of involvement[prat] going on. The transient snap I am used to with 2.06 on my system has all but disappeared from the music and my toe tapping has ceased to exist. Something ain’t right when I want to do something else instead of listen to my music. At this point I will now go back to 2.06 until the final firmware is available. Remote functions are still as quirky as before, just in a different way now.I do have confidence though that the final firmware will be top shelf when the time comes for release.

I’m just curious why such effort and interest in 2.08 from a sound quality aspect. It was supposed to be an interim improvement on functional aspects and, surprise surprise, it turned out to be so much more than that! Hopefully 2 is going to be buried soon and we’ll get to sink our teeth into 3 and have a whole fresh outlook on life with DMP. And then the assessments of that effort can start in ernest.

Thanks for asking… I thought maybe PS Audio and the forum members that are interested in reading this thread may like to hear peoples opinions on the new update. Being audiophiles, it seems to go with the territory.

Paul, while I am thinking about it…will there be any type of compile sound quality comparisons in the same like manner that you and Bascom do before a final firmware update release as with the DS?

Seems like the DMP may benefit from such a sound quality check seeing there is a big difference between the DMP sound quality with the already available firmware. I definitely like 2.06 over 2.08… Thanks.

Broderic - yeah, it seems if you look crosseyed at a FPGA, it’ll change the sound ; ). It truly is a new world (in all seriousness).

It does seem to sound different, but I haven’t gone back and forth (having other things to do at the moment, and having lost my taste for that sort of thing generally unless I’m getting compensated in some fashion). And if people hear something better, I certainly wouldn’t gainsay it, were I Paul.

But this does cause distraction from the functionality questions.

Although I THINK it sounds different, I wonder if it’s like getting high on Pez?

Listened a few days to 2.08 and for me 2.06 sounds better. Better voices / drums with more body. In my set up DMP–> DSD -->Audionet mono blocks–> floating Synthese 2, most with Siltech cables. And P5 for a clean power supply.
Think the same as somebody else wrote, the sound difference was not expected. So next time, when the software is ready, the approach will be different. Functional test and sound test before launching. It’s very easy switching back and forward with software, love my DMP in combination with DSD. Even with 2.06, sounds very good for me. Play always CD and SACD.

Paul, Have you given this update a serious listen? What is your verdict on sound improvement from it?

We will test that to see.

Noticeable. Better bass, tighter focus. Not 1000 shades of improvement but there none the less.

Good to hear…Thank-you.

I installed it three hours ago and listened to a couple of CDs. I hear better bass and perhaps a smidgen more clarity. No glitches at all on the install.

Very happy with this update so far. I will try some hirez discs next.

Does this improve dvd-audio playback as well?

Navigation on some DVD-A and BD titles is slightly better at 2.08.

I too loaded 2.08 today. I notice “different” sound. Not sure it’s better yet, a bit crisper, , , in fact for my system and tastes it’s a bit of a step back. At least the download and installation went perfectly. Haven’t tried to navigate any Blu-ray Audio discs etc yet.

I went back to 1.84 for a spell as I did not really like the sound change to 2.08, then returned to 2.08 as it had some beneficial characteristics and rolled a tube on my amp which helped (replaced an Amperex 6DJ8 with a GE “blackened” 6DJ8 which was a bit warmer).

Then I checked and the new software had disabled “Pure Audio.” With “Pure Audio” enabled the sound returned to what I was more familiar with. It might pay to check if “Pure Audio” is enabled after uploading 2.08.

Excellent catch

Can someone remind me how to find the Pure Audio setting? I just looked for it and could not find it.

Thank you. Mine was still enabled.

By way of background. Early build DMP shipped from the factory with Pure Audio disabled, which was an inadvertent mistake. Owners were contacted and advised what to do to change the setting. So now it seems pure audio disabled is a default setting with the firmware load. Yes?

I have no idea why they give us the option, given there is no video output on DMP. The firmware should just load the enabled condition and be done with it. Then, no need to write about it in the owners manual either.
