That clip was great beef. Someone people continue to try to imitate. The best part was at the end where she stares out with the insecure look almost saying ‘was that ok?’ Thanks for that
Satisfaction of our current gear has a lot to do with state of mind and the number of dollars (or euro’s in my case) in your pocket. When I visited an audio show (as I used to do till 15 years ago), and I attended a demo of a huge speakersystem it was easy to live with it. Those speakers sounded superbe, but were far too big for my livingroom. But if they were about the same size of my current speaker and the price was doable… On the other hand: there is more in life than audio! Nevertheless I can’t wait to receive the ordered DirectStream DAC Mk2 later this month… Audiophiles will be audiophiles after all!
Hush your mouth!
Admin! Is there an Admin in the house!
We need to ban a heretic, post haste.
Of course you are correct. Envy is a destroyer of contentment and “balance” is an important element of fulfillment in life.
Cheers.
It takes a lot of guts to call a proud owner of a P10, a P20, a PST and a DSDAC (to be replaced by the Mk2) a heretic…
LOL…more like a zealot!
The new MKII sounds different every time you switch it on during burn in. After a week it just starts opening up. At first listen it is just different. I think finally it is getting better than, and will go into the rack where my modified DS is placed now. It seems to be getting to a phase where I can turn it loose with my best cables and power cord and see how far it really transcends the previous modded DS.
But being happy with a DS is not a bad place to be. Getting something different requires more tweaks and time, where you can’t really enjoy your purchase until one is satisfied that you’re getting all the performance to match the payment. But having a new DAC that one can appreciate Ted’s firmware creations as they get released is a good place.
I remember when firmware was enough to satisfy ones trek to another performance plateau. I am sure that will return.
The MK2 takes a while to break in. PSA did it for me for two weeks in their lab, so I missed all the fun part of break in. The depth of the soundstage takes longer to develop. This week I finally heard it, and it is deeper than DS. I do not know how it compares to Mod DS, but mine is over a month already (with a new hardware fix in it somewhere).
Getting the free firmware updates with a PSA DAC is the icing on the cake. Long after your purchase you’ll continue to receive regular infusions of audio goodness to help curb your upgraditis.
In my situation I am fairly certain that something better would be hard to find.
There is usually bigger better faster out there but I am grateful to have what I have at this point in my life. At 62 years old I find myself with a system that I am happy with.
Never say never Al!
I have three really nice systems at various price points and I like them all equally.
Today I am listening to my LS50 W2’s via WiFi from my phone and it’s still making great music so life is good.
I would like to listen to and or own a few more different brands of devices and especially speakers but dont feel the absolute need to do so.
Don’t worry too much, your son is gonna inherit that system.
For five days this thread has been playing on my mind. Am I actually happy with music playback in my home? Yeah, I am. And it’s a realisation I’d not had before. I don’t think I’d ever asked myself the question, really. It feels a bit leveraging to say…I am happy with my system.
I have very occasionally been dissatisfied with something, like the low level performance of some speakers I had about 10 years ago. 99% of the time satisfied.
Of course it’s the job of manufacturers and their distributors to tell you that you can do better and give them your money, or dealers to tempt you to do the same. it does not surprise me that people here pre-order new things before they are even manufactured or tested in the market.
Yes that would be true for me as well, though they won’t appreciated as much as we do.
Once my system got to the point where the tonal balance was smooth top to bottom, the timbres and dynamics became halfway realistic and and the soundstage became detached from the speakers, upgrades have been in the “nice to have” category. In other words, once the system was not doing anything aggressively annoying and projected a “holographic” soundstage - when the recording allows for it.
I have heard ridiculously better systems, but am still a happy camper returning home. (I have also heard ridiculously expensive systems that I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole) That said, If I can scrape up around $5k for an improvement on the order of the MK II DAC vs the MKI, I’ll eventually succumb.
Oh man the stuff I got THIS WEEK pushes me across the finish line.
Finally!
Imagine if you were, just say, only 27 purchases away from finally being done?
But you are way, WAY closer then that.
Maybe just three more purchases!
(BED FRAME PIECES DON’T COUNT)
There will always be a next week. This may depend on the individual, but in your case I’d say there will be, no matter of price level achieved
Generations of dealers relied on this. I think they can’t get so many new customers on such a level. Their main business are those who don’t or can’t stop and even if they reached their price or size level, start to more or less regularly switch gear on similar level. To trigger this is the job of a successful dealer.
