I just saw a vid from Alvin at denafrips on the DMP-A6 into one of their DACs, and he really pushed USB. I don’t think he even talked about using a DDC in the chain.
I think I2S vs USB is dependent a bunch on the source (of course) as well as the DAC side. MKI was way better with DDC in the path to I2S. The MKII usb input has it built in. What “it” is, thats for Ted to explain. I just know it works waaaay better than the MKI. If the Denefrips is the same as MKI, then yeah the DDC with LPS makes a big difference. My guess that is why they make their own DDC as well.
Looks like it’s good quality. If you get a chance to unscrew the face of that power supply, it would be awesome to see what is inside. Let us know how it sounds once you get it all hooked up.
I was going to pop in to Teddy Pardo tomorrow for a cup of tea and to play with some of his toys, but it was not to be.
I put one of his power supplies into a Lumin, which had a pretty naff $10 SMPS. The Eversolo, at a quarter of the price of the Lumin seems to come with a much more significant power supplies. TP has been doing these for years, as a long time Naim Fanboy, as a cheaper alternative to Naim power supplies. His power supply improved the Lumin, but Holo May knocked it out the park. They are based on the Naim supplies rather than a conventional linear power supply.
I do not believe I will be in a position where I will be able to determine what the exact changes the power supply upgrade will make. The A6 sounds very very nice in stock form. Now it is oh so black in background level, and very potent with dynamics. It also sounds more relaxed. It sounds wonderful actually.
The kit comes with the special tool required to remove the unusual fasteners to open the A6. A needed phillips screwdriver was not included. Luckily, I have one. Removing the power supply was very easy. Adding the new internal cable and associated back plate was really really easy. Plugging the connector to the main board was easier still. I closed up the case, hooked it up and turned it on. It worked.
I have been listening for a while now and I am over the moon with the results. It sounds amazing!
Standard DMP-A6, $870. Teddy Pardo power supply $505. For under $1400 this A6 setup is stunning. Oh my God oh my God oh my God!!
