When I was a kid - I was a big fan of Duane Eddy’s twangy guitar outings on Jamie and London American 45s. When CDs came along, I bought the digitally mastered Duane Eddy ones that Jamie licensed to all and sundry (Motown even!)- none of these remasters came anywhere near capturing the energy and presence of those 45s - not even Tom Moulton mixes on a revived Jamie imprint or the state of the art Bear Family reissues circa 2012. I was resigned to the fact that what sounded good on 7" black vinyl could never sound anything more than meh on CD because of the mediocre equipment in the recording studios in Phoenix AZ in the late 50s/60s.
Yesterday, still reveling in the improved SQ of the 2.1.6. firmware, I replayed the BF CD “Duane Eddy Rocks” on the SACD-P. After a long 35 years I finally was able to recapture the energy and oomph of those mono 45s with a 21st century system update. The Jamie version of Eddy’s Peter Gunn sounded as good as the AoN electronic version recording years later and was infinitely more real. The sound that the SACD-P can produce with the DSD is to die for.
Comming back to your question, Ronald (radio-seaside).
With DMP and now with PST I use a Nordost Valhalla 2 4K UHD to connect transport with DSD DAC via HDMI /I2S. Valhalla 2 tends to sound highly resoluted but full-bodied …
After a very long wait I received my PST today. I had read the manual that was posted on the PSAUDIO site so I knew what to do. After unpacking and setting up all the connections I turned it on. First thing that happened when I tried to open the drawer, it got stuck. The same thing happens when I close it. I always like 3/4 of an inch outside the cabinet. A little nudge or pull closes or opens it all the way but this is definitely not the way its supposed to be. When I first played one of my reference CD’s a horrible screeching sound came from the system together with music. This happened with CD’s, SACD’s an thumb drive also. I dont know what solved it but after an hour of trying different media it started playing well and sounds beautiful. It does not recognize double standard discs as SACD though, only as CD. In any case, the door problem is a real disappointment!!! I’ve contacted SERVICE asking what to do. I am seriously considering asking for my money back after this disappointment.
I’m sure we can get this taken care of for you. Have you heard back from one of the folks in our Service department yet?
I heard from Paul himself suggesting to send a replacement overnight. I hope you do this.
yes, I’ve spoken with the Service folks at the factory and they are working on that right now.
I had a quite similar Problem with the CD Tray during my first three days with PST. I fixed it by Pressing the Silver shining bar at the top end of the CD Tray in the tray. Underside the tray and when it was open, there seemed to be feeled a little raw part. Perhaps there got something loose by the Transport of the package; I don’t know. Before the fix, the mechanism stopped opening the tray very often during the opening procedure. It got stuck. Give it a chance by pressing the silvery bar in the CD tray …
Received mine on Sunday. No problem setting up including wifi for future firmware upgrades. First observation is the robustness of the tray and mechanism. Seems much beefier than my DMP. I also prefer the display much more than the DMP screen. Only hiccup was garbled sound upon first play. Like others reported, I just power cycled off from the back and it was gone.
Put in a CD and guess what? Only one click on the remote to get it to play! Remote and on-unit controls all working flawlessly.
Sound is most excellent. Too soon and too little audiophile vocabulary for a full review on SQ at this point. One comment that sticks in my mind is digital glare. I didn’t know what that was until I made the the DMP - PST comparison. I have loved the SQ on the DMP from day one, but this is something really special. Looking forward to putting it through it’s paces over the break and reporting back.
I’m expecting a call any hour now to head up to Boulder to pick-up my PST. Super eager to connect it to my DSD Sr. with fresh mods.
It has been taken to the Ministry of Love for re-education.
I don’t know who did the editing, but he posted that when he made his request for a refund, he thought he was responding to an email, and not posting in a public forum, which I believe, because who puts their mailing address in forum post? Which all led me to the conclusion he probably deleted his posts himself, or they were removed at his request. Of course, I could be wrong.
While I would not have removed the post(s) - bad form by PSA if they did - I was taken aback with the last couple of posts addressing the apparently defective example that was received by the OP.
The posts struck me as gratuitous and left me with the impression that the Andy Rooney, “rest of the story” was not being shared.
Personally, I would never air this kind of back and forth in a public forum unless I wanted to, in good faith, let others know of bad behavior exhibited by a vendor. And, yes, I would have required that the unit be replaced or that I receive a full refund for my trouble.
FWIW.
Mario deleted his own posts, explaining they were meant to be private and for Kevin at PS Audio alone.
This is a common mistake when people post from email. As he explained:
“These last messages were not supposed to go to this forum… I received messages by email and thought I was responding back to the direct email address of a PSAUDIO representative.”
I removed those posts referring to Mario’s as they no longer had a context. Everything else remains.
Again, Mario deleted his own posts. This is entirely his choice.
Holy…(deity of choice here) - I thought this PST thread was off the rails before…
Ok…good to know Elk and thanks for the update.
Makes perfect sense and restores my faith (not that it matters to him or others) in the OP and his intentions.
Thanks, @Elk.
We unfortunately live in a culture which assumes behind everything is an evil conspiracy, and all motives bad.
This has been SO boggling my mind lately. And I don’t discount this impulse on either “side”.
First of all, MERRY CHRISTMAS to all. Secondly, I myself deleted the posts that I myself originally entered in this forum. Thirdly and most important, PSAUDIO has solved the problem I posted about in a very rapid and concise manner. Thanks!!!
