Finally....PerfectWave SACD Transport

There are two of the menu items called ‘layer’ and ‘layer default’.
Are they both set to DSD?

Ok, thanks. Yes I have done this now (also upgraded the firmware while at it). After this settitng change and an eject/re-insert, my single layers are playing.

It is curious however because they all worked fine before changing this setting.

Thanks.

Check your settings in the menu. This can happen if the setting for DSD is set incorrectly.

If you need help TJ in our service department can walk you through the process.

FYI layer/layer default as explained in PST FW release note. PST manual has been updated with these options, but I find the release note has more on it. Here is copy from the release notes.

Version 2.3.1
Date March 11, 2021 File image.bin
Description
Support for playing the DSD layer of SACDs to third-party DACs over the I2S output.
New Behavior
Previous versions of Transport code checked for the presence of the I2S cable before allowing the DSD layer of an SACD to play. Some third-party DACs do not properly detect the I2S cable, even when it is present, and would not allow the DSD layer to play at all.
This new version fixes this by playing the DSD layer even if the I2S cable is not detected. To support this, a new menu option has been added.

 There is a new menu item “Layer Default” as well as the existing “Layer” menu item.
 Layer
 The normal Layer menu item shows the user what the current selected
layer is (CD or DSD).
 The user can change the currently selected layer by changing the
Layer menu setting.
 Layer is not stored between reboots of the unit.
 Layer Default
 Layer Default selects what layer should be selected when a new SACD
is put in the unit (CD or DSD).
 This would normally be set once and would not need to change.
 Regardless of what the Layer Default is, the user can switch to the
other layer using the Layer menu option at any time.
 This setting persists across reboots.
An issue to be aware of is that if you select the DSD layer of an SACD, but you don’t have an I2S connection, then audio will still play out the I2S. If you are using a Coax connection, then you will not hear any output, as the DSD layer of SACDs will not play out any output except the I2S due to copyright issues.
To help alleviate this, there is a warning dialog that will pop-up if the DSD layer is selected in the Layer menu item and no I2S cable is detected. Note that on some third-party DACs the cable will not be detected even if it is present, if the DAC does not correctly conform to the PS Audio I2S specification.
PS Audio DACs will correctly identify the cable if it is present. If the user has a third-party DAC, or no cable is present, the following message will appear:
DSD only plays on I2S but no cable detected.
This message will display for 30 seconds, then disappear on it’s own. An Exit button is also available so the user can dismiss it. This message will appear the first time the user tries to change the layer to DSD without a detected I2S cable, after a reboot. It will appear only once, so subsequent attempts to change the layer to DSD will not display the message.
Fixes
 TRANS-409: Implement DSD layer of SACD over I2S for third-party DACs

Congrats Paul. Now you can break-in the PST and the Spring 3 together. Will also give you a chance to see if any issues come up with your PST in the process.

Thanks Jack……I’m listening to the Spring 3 DAC now. All I can say is WOW. If this is how good it sounds out of the box I can only imagine how great it will sound after 500 hours.

If it’s anything like my May KTE it will start an up and down period. I played mine in the main system for a few days to get a feel for it and then hooked it up to an old OPPO on repeat mode and just let it play 24/7 for weeks checking on it every so often. But since you need to break in the PST and check it for “bugs and quirks” you can just do the same with them both and turn everything else off. I put mine in a spare bedroom with the OPPO and an old preamp with no power. If as reports indicate it has 90%+ of the May’s sound you should be pleased.

Here is a relatively recent review (don’t think its been posted here yet):

A couple of highlights:

“I was able to listen more clearly to sounds I didn’t expect (or wanted), like a conductor’s heavy breathing in crescendo moments. Case in point, Eliahu Inbal and The Tokyo Metropolitan (2016) on Mahler’s Ninth . Still, the pristine sound of the entire orchestra, a superb soundstage coming from the synergy of my setup, was superb. The ‘Adagio’ from this symphony is one of the most beautiful ever written.”

“The PS Audio sound is so immersive, I was with baton in hand accompanying Iván Fischer conducting Mahler’s Second and Fourth with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Spectacular.”

FYI.

I find it strange that the Absolute Sound had the PST as a recommended component but hasn’t posted a full review yet.

They’ve done that before, all the way back to the beginning, whether in a simple recommendation or a capsule review, usually with a note at the end saying a full review is forthcoming. Not that those promised reviews always materialized.

I just need my wife to leave home for a few hours to discover this for myself. I have a 9-disc Mahler set waiting at the ready . .

Your better half does not know you play air baton?

Oh she does, but she dislikes loud music.

These are perfectwawe memory player and ds dac cards
like the same
but there is a difference between them, where the infrared receiver is located, some have a resistor, some do not

I thought it would be removed because the resistor assembly was very sloppy on the last card, so I disassembled it and attached a led.

but i guess not
Can you explain the differences between them?
I would be very happy if you add montage photos for the perfect wawe memory player.
Will there be a resistor or a led?
Or will it be a light colored plastic frame?

@tedsmith

Thanks

I need help with installation if possible.
