This is a good sounding, standard formula, easy to listen to album that would be good for those just discovering jazz.
Worth owning.
Art Blakey and the New Jazz Messengers, Buttercorn Lady. This set recorded live at the Lighthouse features a couple of young lions, Keith Jarrett and Chuck Mangione. The latter sounds exceptional, too bad Chuck sold out swinging for a more pop oriented easy listening form of contemporary jazz. Also with Frank Mitchell and Reggie Johnson. An easy listen.
Yet another cool fall morning. This has become my favorite time of year. The beautiful falling leaves, the crisp air. My poor old fading dog enjoys the cool air too. It’s sad to see her in her final stage of life but also nice that she wants to cuddle and sleep beside me . . . she gives me so much sweet companionship.
Starting off with
I really like this album. My appreciation for Jano’s participation has waned, but some great material here.
Joni Mitchell “Mingus” from the box set.
Eric Alexander “Mode for Mabes” Delmark cd
Another cold morning! This is helping me ease into the day.

Disc 3. I’m really enjoying the music and the mastering on this box set. Seems that this vintage period of jazz is less appreciated than others, but I’ve long enjoyed these players and their work.
Listening to Bob Crosby singing brings back memories of my Dad singing these sort of songs to we kids back when we were little. He had a very similar voice and style. Cracked us up! Wish I could hear it again.
Enjoying George Wettling’s drumming on these discs. He was quite a drummer and artist!
I’m on a “well recorded piano” kick lately. This is another good one.
And for the first time I can say I have a favorite label: Pablo
A cool morning, still and quiet. I’m playing some mainstream melodic music to help ease my tinge of sadness brought on by my dog’s obvious malaise today.
Dave McKenna, Scott Hamilton & Jake Hanna
“No Bass Hit” Concord cd
Followed by
Booker Ervin “Text Book Tenor” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD
Woody Shaw! Kenny Barron! Young stars in the making.
Fiona got up and ate, making me feel better. That gal is a foodie, so when she doesn’t immediately eat I worry.
King Crimson The Power to Believe, not sure if it is just an early morning adjustment on my part, my system requiring more warm up time, a continuation of the Gryphon Power Zone 3.10 breaking in, or The Crimson just not liking the recent system changes, (Fidelium XLR). This sounds gnarly in a way I do not recall, not in a good way. Sounds congested on fortes, an unwelcome thinning of vocals, among other things. Arrgh, time for chores.
Wrapping up a late night, and finding it is a new day. This rather rare LP is a fine gift from a forum member.
Sidiki Diabate Ensemble Ba Togoma
A warmer morning, Fiona the dachshund has her appetite back this morning, which is re-assuring. I stood and listened to an owl for a few minutes. Love this plot of land across from the forest.
I’m breaking in a new pair of output tubes (Shuguang Black Treasure 300B-Z) and put on this old favorite to hear what condition the condition is in. A few more full days of power on before the tubes are really broken in.
Antonio Carlos Jobim “Stone Flower” (CTI RVG King Jazz Japan SHM-CD)
Followed by
Freddie Hubbard “Breaking Point” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD
A favorite Hubbard. James Spaulding!
Dave Young Quintet “Mainly Mingus” Justin Time cd
Starting off a warm Indian Summer morning with some MIngus interpretations. Nice! As an owner of a number of bass instruments I like bassist led sessions.

“Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc VI
The amazing Fats Waller!

Marty Grosz et al “Remembering Louis” Jump Records cd
Wanting to listen to Chairman Mao on this most fine sounding Naim CD, Charlie Haden and John Taylor Nightfall. IIRC correctly recorded by ProMusica’s John Christiansen.
Another really warm fall morning. . . should be beautiful before the rain scheduled to dampen the Halloween outings of neighborhood kiddos.
Revisiting this Sun Ra recording from 1970. Although the music is not that special for Ra recordings, and features the sort of performance art philosophy that honestly turns me off and away from a lot of jazz that is at the very fringes of the tradition, the recording is truly fascinating, showing the depth and vitality of the sound in the theater–a good system really transports you into an audience seat.
Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra “Paradiso Amsterdam 1970”
On to
Bobby Hutcherson “Happenings” Blue Note 85th Anniversary UHQCD
A very favorite recording in excellent new mastering.
Keeping in the spirit of the day with Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain. If last year is any predictor of this year’s turn out we anticipate between 1100 - 1200 Trick-or-Treaters in a 90 minute span. Looking forward to the little goblins and witches.
We had the nicest weather for Halloween in a decade and about 40 nice kids visiting. Our road has no street lights so it’s accordingly spooky and we sat at the end of our driveway and had a blast watching trick or treaters come up or down the hill into the light from our deck and house. A few hours of open air helped the three of us (Lucinda and Fiona the dachshund) sleep really well.
Back today to this box set,
Okay, I don’t usually enjoy celeste, but Meade Lux Lewis is making it sing and swing. Other great piano centric sessions also on board this disc.
“Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc VII
Followed by
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers “Roots & Herbs” Blue Note 85th Anniversary UHQCD
Another really good remaster.
