Cool morning, quiet and calm. Lots of the leaves are gone, already. Sigh.
Starting the day off with a new arrival from dustygroove.com
Tete Montoliu “Recordano A Line” Discophon/Muzak Japan cd
A strong trio date by a pianist I appreciate more and more over the years.

Andrew Hill “A Beautiful Day, Revisited” Palmetto cd, 2024
An expanded and remixed reissue of this challenging large ensemble Hill recording.
A cold morning! I’m starting off with this favorite, this time the CTI Supreme Blu-Spec CD version.

“Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc VIII
Starting off strong with some great Teddy wilson and including some great John Kirby and Betty Roche tracks.
A cold morning. Right before bed had an emergency–Fiona the dachshund was bleeding profusely from the mouth–I think she lost a tooth. Blood got all over the sofa cover, my pants and shirt, and towels we threw down all over the rug. Took an hour or so to get it to stop, gave her a dog aspirin. She went to sleep and is back to normal this morning–exceeding my expectation. She’s really a trooper.
Decided to listen to a chill pill, the 85th Anniversary Blue Note Japan UHQCD version of Grant Green’s “Idle Moments.” It sounds great. It is hard to not make this session sound great.
Used this disc to do some tube rolling of the 12AU7 positions in my Decware ZROCK2 and SEWE300B—settled on an Amperex 5814 in the ZROCK2 and a favorite tube of mine, a Holland made “Sunbeam” labeled 12AU7 that just adds a magic bit of body to the sound, which was needed as I have that 5814 in the amp which is very “precise” and a treasured pair of RFT 7308 in the driver positions for the 300B-Z tubes in the amp, which are also quite precise and accurate sounding.

“Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc IX
Starts off with Bunny Briggs tap dancing!
A warm morning. Listening with my wife’s tolerance (she’s up early) just to keep me from watching election coverage.
Helen Merrill/Dick Katz “A Shade of Difference” Gitanes cd
Followed by
Andrew Hill “A Beautiful Day–Revisited” cd 1
Kronos Quartet Outer Spaceways Incorporated: Kronos Quartet & Friends Meet Sun Ra. Clearly they are having fun with this one, including samples from Sun Ra’s Outer Spaceways Incorporated. While the instrumentation is drastically different this reminds me of Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra, in a good way. Listening to this is much preferred to chasing election results, Chasing Jazz in the Midwest.

The Red Norvo/Mildred Bailey material is really good.
Starting off the cool morning listening to this one again. Pass was such a focused and expressive player. And I feel the connection to Bird in this recording.
Joe Pass “I Remember Charlie Parker” Pablo cd
Followed by something very different. . . .
Donald Byrd “Places and Spaces” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD
Ordered two copies of this one by mistake. Probably my least favorite recording reissued in the series, but I must admit it sounds damned good in this edition.
The Mizell Brothers production here seems fresher and more energetic than some other collaborations. Of its time, not timeless, but an interiguing presentation.
Cold this morning! Fiona the dachshund let me sleep an hour longer than usual this morning and I’m grateful. Eerily quiet outside!
Starting the day off with . . a prayer meeting, digital variety.
Jimmy Smith “Prayer Meeting” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

Finishing off my first time through this excellent box set! Amazing sound quality for 'forties material. And the Red Norvo session starting off this disc is great.
Disc X1
I have been eagerly anticipating Sun Ra KIngdom of Discipline, basically a 1978 rehearsal session recorded at the West Philadelphia Saturn House on Morton Street. Vinyl copies were limited to 75, and each sleeve hand made and assembled in keeping with the original Saturn Records sold at Arkestra concerts. Being an avid Sun Ra Arkestra collector this one is a nice addition to the collection. Sonically the sound is especially good, regarding the performance it is a rehearsal warts and all with Sun Ra correting Arkestra players as they work through their parts.
Another cold morning. I’m looking forward to a dinner out with my lovely wife and the older of my two younger brothers and my sister-in-law (my favorite of six, don’t tell the others). Fiona the dachshund is about to settle in for her first nap of the day and I’m ready to enjoy a few hours with the amazing sounding system.
“Miles in France 1963 & 1964 The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8” disc 2
This disc is mainly the previously released “Miles Davis In Europe” – a favorite since the 'Seventies. As the second night in Antibes '63 it is more fiery and Tony Williams is proving to the world that he is a force that will present to the world a new way to drum. And George Colemen is ready to show Europe what he can do.

Norwegian pianist and keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft IM as the eastern sun breaks through the morning mist.
I ordered the vinyl set, in the meantime I’m streaming the first tracks from Qobuz.
Very ‘energetic’ performances so far…
I had seriousyl considered the Vinyl box set, when ordering the CD box. I am completely out of shelf space so vinyl box sets are a no go for the time being, especially if a CD version is available. I am a big fan of vinyl, but my collection size is becoming a “problem”.
I’ve had some poor luck with recently purchased new vinyl. I haven’t been able to find out any details about where the disks were pressed…fingers crossed….
