First music of the day

Another cool and damp morning. We’re finally getting typical November weather, though I think we’ll have a few warmer and sunnier days starting tomorrow. I love the quiet and peaceful vibe of this time of morning outside.

Started off with a re-spin of some of the Garland at the Prelude disc 1 then saw Ron Carter talking about Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar” on Facebook and decided to spin this “CITI-RVG” cd version from King Records Japan. What a great session with Freddie Hubbard and George Benson and Ron Carter.

NOW ONTO

Re-listeing to disc 5 of this new box set. In part because it is one of the parts of this box set I did not have before, and in part because I just don’t want to get to the end of this set so am saving disc 6 for . . . probably tomorrow.

I must admit as much as like George Coleman with the Quintet I really enjoy what Wayne Shorter brings to it as I listen to Disc 5.

Jon Hassell Vernal Equinox, lifting the mist off ghe prarie this morning

Rather warm again. Was just thinking "Wow, we haven’t had snow yet. . . unusual. . . " and looked at the upcoming weather and we have some snow predicted for Thursday. We’ll see!

Finally listening to the final disc of this box. What a great set. One could wish that the last two discs sounded a bit better, but if wishes were horses there would be dung everywhere.

I had a part of a dream last night that I was looking for a Blossom Dearie record. Well I have a few, more on cd, and decided to listen to this one.

A nice one with full orchestra from 1964, originally a Capitol LP, on cd from the US on her own Daffodill Records (manufacutred by Capitol Special Products) and later a Capitol cd, and from TOCJ Japan a few times.

Nice quote, I can almost hear the bead of water slipping along the blade of grass.

Starting off a relatively warm morning with a re-listen to this one. Man. … the sound on this is vivid. Of course as the leader is a bassist that is very closely miked, but OMG it sounds as if you are five feet in front of a wondeful bass.

Outside this morning there were four deer in our side yard when I took Fiona the dachshund out. They stood and watched me as I watched them for a few minutes. Then they moseyed off calmly. This is the third morning this month I’ve encountered deer, possibly the same deer, and we’re all more relaxed with each other. A big plus to living here.

Re-listening to the second half of this one again this cool morning. Fiona the dachshund and I were battling wills this morning. She wanted up way too early, and I managed to get her to go back to sleep twice. . . but lost this third time. I could use more sleep–going to have to make up for that later.

This Nash cd is quite nice–it’s fun to have the two trumpeters alternating here (not playing together)

Miles Davis “1958 Miles” Sony Blu-Spec CD2

One of my versions of this session that is much talked about at the moment as an LP and SACD are forthcoming from Analogue Productions.

My beef with this new reissue is they are casting it as a “warmup to Kind of Blue.” Um, no it’s not.

I’ll get the SACD eventually when I can find it without paying 10 dollars shipping, further on down the road. It’s fantastic music and this cd sounds really good–as does the mono version in the Mono Albums box set.

Finally getting to sit down and listen this morning. We are having our first snow! It’s later than usual this year, and not much, a fine snow that is dusting the bare trees with its fragile beauty, the forest across the street looks like a moody black and white photo. I like the bare trees so much better with snow!

Listening to some slightly funky Milt to start off the day.

Two excellent bass and drum teams forming trios here. An exceptional debut.

At the moment the cd version of this seems only available in Japan, but I had to have a copy so I ordered one and it arrived yesterday. Would have been prohibitively expensive, but I had a lot of points with cdjapan which defrayed the cost.

Joel Ross is on board, one reason that I ordered but I do have almost all of Hill’s previous releases and enjoy the musical journeys he leads one on.

Marquis Hill “Composers Collective: Beyond The JukeBox”

And now finishing up listening to . . . .

The amazing SACD stereo/quad release of Santana “Borboletta” from Sony.

This recording is part of my listening foundation, I’ve enjoyed it ever since its first release and man it has never sounded better (listening to the stereo SACD layer). Just such a great sequenced, mixed and performed album now in sonic glory.
