First music of the day

Another cold morning with rain. Sigh. Gotta get used to the rain, we’re getting so much.

I’ve been putting some hours on a new tube as the input on the SEWE300B amp, an Amperex (maybe GE?) 5814A. Working well with the Subeam (Holland) 12AU7 in the ZROCK2. I don’t think that one is coming out in the foreseeable future!

Starting off with the “Round Midnight” soundtrack on Columbia cd. The sound from this French studio is quite interesting!

On to this 2 cd set released Friday, “Forces Of Nature: Live At Slug’s” on Blue Note, listed with McCoy Tyner and Joe Henderson as co-leaders.

DeJohnette is driving this quartet!

A late start to the listening day due to unexpected domestic issues involving the well pump. Fortunately now resolved. It sure was cold, a damp cold, much earlier this morning.

Starting off with a Stan Getz I had not heard in some time, Steeple Chase cd “Copenhagen Unissued Session 1977” which is a quartet with Joanne Brackeen, NHO Pedersen and Billy Hart. Truly nice sound and performances.

Another cold morning. Fiona the dachshund is unusually tired. . . not necessarily a good thing, but I’m letting her nap next to me under her favorite blanket.

Miroslav Vitous “Purple” CBS/Sony cd

Starting off with. . . .

It’s been a long time since I listened to this. Clearly a Weather Report “side” album in its way, but the arco playing makes me think that it may have been an inspiriation for McLaughlin to include a violinist in his Mahavishnu Orchestra that was soon to follow.

Gerald Cannon “Gerald Cannon” Woodneck cd

Sherman Irby brings his distinctive down home ways to this one. Great disc!

Fiona the dachshund got me up early again and I couldn’t shut my brain off and go back to sleep, so I gave up and started listening.

Starting off with disc 2 of this 2 cd set released Friday, “Forces Of Nature: Live At Slug’s” on Blue Note, listed with McCoy Tyner and Joe Henderson as co-leaders.

First music of the day for me these days (at least on M-W-F) is what I choose to help pass the time during my 8:00 AM cardiac rehab workouts. Today it was this favorite from The Decemberists, “The Crane Wife.”

A Kevin Gray remaster LP supplementing the earlier LP versions I have in my collection. Kicking it off with the title track and on to Le Fleurs Africaines.

Excellent album.
I’m really enjoying the newly revealed living, breathing textures of trumpet with my new speakers.

Food prep kept me from listening til now, but I’m happy to hear this . . . the sequel has gotten spun lately, but it’s been a spell since this has been in the transport.

A quiet still post-holiday morning with about an inch of snow on the ground. They predicted more, and we’re under a watch for another 30 hours or so. The trees look beautiful sporting their coats of snowflakes.

Starting off with:

Eric Alexander “The First Milestone” Milestone cd

Followed by

Abbey Lincoln “Over the Years” Gitaness/Verve cd

Abbey accompanied by saxophonist Joe Lovano, trumpeter Jerry González, cellist Jennifer Vincent, guitarist Kendra Shank, pianist Brandon McCune, double bassist John Ormond, and drummer Jaz Sawyer.

Well the big news Thanksgiving and yesterday was we could get “feet of snow.” Usually they are correct for our hilly area as we get all the “lake effect” snow predicted. But. . . so far., and we’re nearly out of the “watch” period, we have gotten less than an inch, a nice sweetener for the view but no hindrance at all. Seems weird as we’re so used to being slammed even when they say it may not be so bad.

Relieved! Fiona has finally gone back to sleep and I felt like listening to some Dexter Gordon. Picked this set off the shelves as I have not been listening to it much at all the last decade or so.

Dexter Gordon “The Complete Prestige Recordings” disc 2 of 11–featuring Booker Ervin on one track, James Moody on the others, Jaki Byard on one track and Barry Harris on the others.

Listening to Barry Harris made me think strongly of Bud, then my mind shifted to Monk and I put in the third disc of this excellent box set:

Thelonious Monk “The Columbia Years: '62-'68”

I haven’t listened to Columbia Monk in a bit and this seemed a good way to start. Opening with the Newport performance with Pee Wee Russell sitting in is I think brilliant sequencing.
