First music of the day

Just arrived. The solos are very different from previous recordings which is nice.
Sound quality is ok but nothing special.

Nice! I thought this wasn’t to be released until April 11, seems you scored an advance copy.

Got it from Acoustic Sounds.
Frankly based on SQ, unless you want this in your Miles Davis collection, I’d just stream it.

The cold is back! And rain expected. . . as well as tomorrow which would suck as we’re scheduled to join in a local “Hands Off” event.

“Basie Big Band” Pablo Japan cd

This was still in the transport and I’m spinning it again.

I saw the Basie Orchestra about this time in Chicago in a Catholic Church near the University of Chicago which I was attending. I had wanted to go to the concert with the woman who seventeen years later became my first wife, but someone else had asked her first. I remember loving the show. . . and also watching her as much as I could out with the other guy. I was always drawn to her like a magnet. I think that emotional activity causes me to really remember the band’s performance.

This disc has real dynamics. A great recording.

Starting off a rainy morning with Branford Marsalis Qartet’s new one on Blue Note, “Belonging”–the Quartet re-interprests the Jarrett album with pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner.

Very nice. Hope the rain goes away. . .we’re supposed to go to Chagrin Falls for a “Hands Off” event this afternoon with a few neighbors.

Then on to

Count Basie & His Orchestra “88 Basie Street” OJC/Pablo cd

A Sammy Nestico composted, arranged and conducted session. Joe Pass on board as well.

Just what I needed.

Satoko Fujii Tokyo Trio Dream a Dream, picked this CD up from Satoko during her recent US tour. The Tokyo Trio played at Chicago’s Constellation, a most memorable experience. I should note Satoko’s recordings are all of exceptional sonic quality, a fine test of one’s system capabilities. Dream a Dream is yet anothe fine example of the Tokyo Trio’s musicianship.

“Bill Evans in England” Resonance Records 2 cd set, disc 1

I haven’t played this one in a while, and as a new RSD release (I go for the cd that comes out usually a week afterwards) is due, it seemed a good pick to start this cold morning (snow on the ground again!)

I see a Bill Evans recording and get a sense I know it. . . and each time I do listen I find surprises, big and little, in the performance, arrangement, sound. . . a great thing.

Especially it seems lately as the system shines so brightly.

“Classic Vanguard Jazz Piano Sessions” Mosaic Records, disc V

The first disc of the excellent duets between Ellis Larkins and Ruby Braff.

Reaching for Akira Sakata this morning, specifically Fisherman’s.com originally released in CD format on Japanese lable Starlets Records, and reissued as an LP on Austria’s Trost label. Fisherman’s.com has Akira Sakata visiting traditional Japanese fisherman’s songs and calls in his own way, with guitarist Pete Cosey (yes that Pete Cosey), bassist Bill Laswell, and drummer Hamid Drake.

Going to be another cold day. Spring has taken a step back. It snowed twice yesterday, in the wee hours of the morning and in the afternoon. Better times ahead.

This one again before it returns to the shelves. Tom’s High Note recordings are so so good.

An easy morning listen of some of Keith Jarrett’s finest, of which there are many, The solo Vienna Concert.

Starting a cold morning off with the warm and wise voice of Andy Bey.

Andy Bey “Ballads, Blues and Bey”

Moving on to something different. . . my original release LP of Jerry Garcia Band “Cats Under the Stars”. . . a favorite.

Excellent, thoughtful music.

A cold morning. Lucinda and I have an appointment for our taxes today. . . expecting to write a big check. Sigh.

Starting off with the mostly composed pieces on “Mountains” by Micah Thomas.

Again! Revisiting catching up with this very interesting release on this cold soggy morning.

Another cold day for Spring.

Starting off with some Kenny Burrell and Harold Land with Bill Evans, a nice way to ease into the day.

I like John Adams’ album Acoustic Covers. Great songs, a great voice, and a wonderful sense of space.
