Cold again, and ye olde dachshund is not doing so well. . . I didn’t get enough sleep but I’ll try and make up for that later.
Starting off with a new arrival, Ethan Iverson Quartet & Tom Harrell “Common Practice” . . . I’m not the biggest Iverson fan but I do love Tom Harrell and he is playing really well on this live session.
And now
The turntable is spinning with the mono version of a stereo LP I spun last week, “Jack Teagarden” on Verve.
Both the stereo and mono sound glorious; the stereo is a lot cleaner copy.
Should be another warmer day thank goodness.
I’ve been neglecting my collection of Japanese 24 Bit by RVG cds for too long, decided to spin this one.
Donald Byrd “Off to the Races” Blue Note Japan 24 Bit by RVG lp facsimile cd
Followed by
Chick Corea “Return to Forever” ECM LP
Listened to my OG LP and man what a wonderful experience. This is a masterpiece. What Joe, Flora and Airto contribute has always intrigued me. And Chick’s Fender Rhodes playing is among the best ever.
Quite a change to wake up and not be woken up! I’ll adjust.
Starting off a cold morning with Paul Desmond “East of the Sun” Discovery cd
Paul Desmond and Jim Hall together with Percy Heath and Connie Kay of the MJQ. Easing into Tuesday well.
Ready now for something a bit harder-hitting.
Per Goldschmidt, Tom Harrell, Niels Lan Doky, Niels-Henning
Ørsted Pedersen, Alvin Queen “Frankly: A Tribute To Sinatra” Milestone cd
Another cold morning. One day it will be the warmer part of spring!
Starting off with some Brazilian jazz to warm things up and burst a little cloud of melancholy.
Mario Adnet “Saudade Maravilhoso”
A beautiful recording.
On to
Tom Harrell “Something Gold, Something Blue” High Note cd
A two trumpet date with guitar.
Bass – Ugonna Okegwo
Drums, Tambourine – Johnathan Blake
Guitar – Charles Altura
Oud – Omer Avital (one track)
Trumpet – Ambrose Akinmusire
Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Producer – Tom Harrell
Recorded at Water Music, Hoboken, NY on August 29 & 30, 2015.
Our routine has changed a bit and my wife has been getting up earlier so I didn’t get much listening time in first thing this morning. And I missed it! She’s catching up on some of her home improvement shows (ugh) and I’m sitting down for a listen. It’s going to be warmer today and I’m looking forward to some walks later.
Starting off with a great 2 cd set from 2023 that sort of got lost in the shelves.
Brian Blade “Lifecycles, Vols. 1-2: Now! and Forever More Honoring Bobby Hutcherson”
Brian Blade - drums and background vocals
Rogerio Boccato - percussion
Jon Cowherd - piano, wurlitzer and background vocals
Monte Croft - vibraphone, marimba and lead vocals
John Hart - guitar
Myron Walden - flute, tenor and alto saxophone and bass clarinet
Doug Weiss - bass
This is a wonderful tribute to “Now!” and other Bobby Hutcherson musics. And great engineering as well.
Now on to
Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Paul Motian “The Old Country” ECM Japan SHM-CD
I confess I’m not the biggest Paul Motian fan but this is a really good trio date. . . even if I would have preferred DeJohnette were on board.
Yesterday I played the stereo disc in this set, now onto the mono original release. I think I prefer the mono by a hair–fantastic music.
Miles Davis “Milestones” Sony Blu-Spec CD2, stereo and mono 2 cd set
Going to be a wet, slightly soggy day. Getting some listening in before I have to get ready to go to a public gathering in Mentor with my wife and a few neighbors. Supposed to be a bit rainy, hope we can avoid a lot of the rain.
I wanted to start off with the second disc of this set. . . but it won’t load in the transport. Sigh. I’ll try again in another transport later.
“Bill Evans - Further Ahead: Live in Finland 1964-1969” Elemental Music 2 cd set
So on to Joel Ross “The Parable of the Poet,” Blue Note cd. I’ve been wanting to revisit this excellent disc for a while.
Followed by
Charles Mingus “The Clown” Atlantic/Analogue Productions SACD
An excellent sounding edition of this fantastic album. I love all the work this group did. . .the front line is just glorious.
The cold is back after a warm (if wet) yesterday. We had a fun outdoor “protest” event yesterday, today we travel a few hours to visit one of Lucinda’s sister and brother-in-law for a holiday meal.
Starting off with Out Of/Into “Motion I” a really nice gathering of Blue Note “young lions” that I have been enjoying since its release.
Hope everyone had a nice Easter.
Starting off a cool morning with a great recording and great reissue:
Duke Ellington “Blues in Orbit” Analogue Productions SACD
On to . . . .
More Ellington, mid-forties.
Duke Ellington “The Duke Ellington Centennial Edition: The Complete RCA Victor Recordings (1927-1973)” disc 14
Last night Lucinda and I watched Brittany Howard on “Austin City Limits.” Wow! The system sounded great and the performances were stellar!
Now this warm morning on the main system more Prestige Coltrane.
John Coltrane “Fearless Leader” 6 cd set, disc 5
Coltrane with Harden, Garland, Chambers and Cobb
A cold morning, but due to warm up nicely later. Re-listening to this one as I got interrupted halfway through last night.
A good one. . . enjoying Tom Harrell’s involvement a lot.
Wayne Escoffery “Like Minds” Smoke Sessions cd
On to
I’m glad I got the complete series of these concerts. Each recording is different.
Horace Tapscott, Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra
“Live at IUCC 11/25/79” disc 2
