A late start today, and did some rectifier rolling–settled for now on a Bendix 5R4WGB.
Pulled this one from the shelves and am enjoying the sound and playing a LOT.
Joshua Redman (saxophone), Brad Mehldau (piano), Christian McBride (bass), and Brian Blade (drums)
Joshua Redman Quartet “RoundAgain” Nonesuch cd
On to
“Basie in London” Verve cd
Apparently not recorded in London (was recorded in Gothenburg, Sweden) but man what a performance!
A cool soggy morning. I woke up hungry–looking forward to breakfast with my wife and one of her sisters and brother-in-law at an okay cafe. Hip Bop Essence All-Stars “Bongo Bop” Hip Bop Essence cd
This is a fun date and like all those I’ve heard on the label by the All Stars (varying groups) very well-recorded.
The violin is a surprise and those organists all deliver.
Alto Saxophone – Jorge Sylvester
Arranged By – Milan Simich
Bongos – Papo Pepin
Clarinet – Bob Franceschini
Drums – Idris Muhammad
Organ – Doug Carn, Joey DeFrancesco, Dr. Lonnie Smith or Rueben Wilson
Trombone – Josh Roseman
Violin – Michał Urbaniak
And now
Needed some funk this morning.
My original 2 LP set of Miles Davis “Live/Evil” bought 51 years ago. Sounding great today!
A nice warm morning. I enjoyed a few minutes staring at our dogwood which is fully in bloom–a brief but beauteous few weeks when this hardy tree blooms. (It has been shortened by wind and snow storms twice in the last two decades!)
I’m starting off with a cd that was sent to me inscribed by the artist herself. A wonderful surprise! I really like this disc.
Claudia Acuna “Turning Pages”
Followed by
A bit of funky Green.
Grant Green “Green is Beautiful” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD
A discombobulated day today. Just now sitting down to listen to this excellent album and feeling recombobulation happening.
PS–flute thru an octave divider sounds nice.
Burning in the new P15, so sweet…
A bit cool and soggy. Going to a “protest” at noon in town, so interesting that this little town is hosting one.
Starting off with dsic 2 of Art Pepper “Geneva 1980” Omnivore cd. . . I really like the pianist on this date and other recent live Pepper releases, Milcho Leviev. Sound is okay here–he could be better heard but it’s not terrible.
Now on to
I’ve been holding this in reserve for the right time and this morning seems right.
Charles Mingus “In Argentina: The Buenos Aires Concerts” Resonance Records 2 cd set, disc 1
I’m a Mingus nut so this was one of the most exciting release of the year for me.
A late start to listening today, tasks got in the way and I didn’t have time to myself early in the morning as Lucinda came to life the same time I did.
Starting off with
The Miles Davis “Bitches Brew” Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab One Step 2 LP box of this release I know so well. Waited about 3 years for this I think and was so excited to finally gei it. I have OG Lps, reissue LPs, and one of nearly every cd and SACD release of this title which is so much a part of my listening world and has been from about '72.
Unfortunately. . . Record One, Side One is defective in a way that I have never had an LP be defective before: there is a very loud low frequency buzz that rattles woofers the entire first side, covering up the music itself. The other sides seem to be fine.
Sigh. I’ll have to figure out how to get a replacement for that LP.
That sucks. Is the sound on the remaining sides worth the price? I too have many versions and I’m trying to decide if I need another…..
I honestly have to live with these sides for a bit and digest . . . . Not sure anyone who has multiple copies NEEDS this one. I need to listen a few more times, and towards the end of listening sessions when the system is really warmed up and my attention has been honed in without distraction. Right now I would say this is a “darker” rendition than say the Quad SACD, and there is lots of bass and a bit more depth to the soundstage. Fun listen.
EDIT TO ADD: Music Direct has already said they are sending me a replacement copy. They have always taken care of any problems I’ve had with any purchase.
NEXT in the transport:
Kenny Burrell & Art Blakey “On View At the Five Spot.Cafe” Blue Note Japan SHM-SACD
The entire content of the new 2 cd set on one SACD. Sounds very good–a bit “faster” and less warm than the Analogue Productions SACD I also have.
Another soggy cool morning. Spring has really sprung though–it’s beautiful to see the lovely early shades of green on the thousands of trees around us.
Starting off with this disc of Sarah Vaughan Mercury recordings. I really like Sarah. I want to love Sarah. I keep listening on and off trying to fall harder for her.
“The Complete Sarah Vaughan on Mercury Vol. 4” disc 1
Then. . . .
The Miles Davis “Bitches Brew” Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab One Step 2 LP box
Re-listening to LP 2 of this 2 LP set. It’s hard to explain what is the difference between this set and other releases I have. There is more “atmosphere” here and I think it’s because the background is so dark and silent that little details come in and help with instrument placement and dynamic texture. During “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down” I was able to hear a little more definition and heft to the fascinating notes that Dave Holland was supplying with inspiration. That’s among my favorite parts of the release and it was really intriguing to hear.
This is a very interesting mastering and pressing. As a lover of “Bitches Brew” I find it worth the wait.
Early morning listen prior to a brief bike ride and hike. On the hunt for more fungi, hopefully enough to add to a frittata for breakfast.
Feels weird to sleep in to 6 a.m. Getting used to being without my little dachshund “boss.”
Starting off with Grateful Dead “Dave’s Picks Vol. 48”
A cool, quiet morning. Starting off with a newly arrived used cd.
Steve Grossman “Time to Smile” Dreyfus Jazz cd
Bass – Cecil McBee
Drums – Elvin Jones
Piano – Willy Pickens
Tenor Saxophone – Steve Grossman
Trumpet, Flugelhorn – Tom Harrell
Recorded in New York City on February 12, 1993.
Following that. . .
I played “Bitches Brew” from side two of record One in the Miles Davis Ultra Disc One Step “Bitches Brew” box.
Then followed that with the Bobby Shew Quintet “Playing with Fire” Mama Records cd–featuring both Bobby and Tom Harrell on trumpet.
Baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett ventures into AfroBeat territory on this enjoyable 1987 SoulNote release. Hamiet is joined by Hugh Masakela, James “Plunky” Branch, Quincy Troupe, Chief Bey, Donald Smith, Billy “Spaceman” Patterson, Okeryema Asante,Seku Tonge, Titos Sampa. Nice sounding LP engineered by JIm Anderson.
A cold morning, but it’s going to be a sunnier, warmer day than yesterday. Looking forward to the usual Friday breakfast out with my favorite in-law couple.
Brittany Howard “Live at Austin City Limits” RSD Island LP
After seeing this performance and seeing there was an RSD LP . . . I picked it up. Will replay it later when I can crank it more!
