First music of the day

Ha, this is not one I have and from your comment I’d probably take a pass on it.

A beautiful way to start a day’s listening. Both the music and the sound. . . gorgeous.

Harish Raghavan “In Tense” Whirlwind Records cd

This one will test your system’s bass playback. I like the music. . . Eric Harland always delivers, as does Joel Ross here.

Harish Raghavan - double bass
Eric Harland - drums
Charles Altura - guitar
Joel Ross - vibraphone/marimba
Morgan Guerin - tenor saxophone, electric wind instrument, bass clarinet

A standout solo album from Marilyn Crispell, Live in San Francisco. The piece Dear Lord is worth a repeat listen. Marilyn will be playing with a quartet featuring Jason Stein, Damon Smith, and Alex Shead locally in Madison this Saturday.

Gary Meek “Step 7”

A nice somewhat smooth session I picked up because Airto, Flora Purim and Jose Neto are on board. Gary has performed and recorded often with Flora and Airto.

Sneaking in an early listen of this pre-release teaser, planned to hit the streets July 14. The 1961 Village Gate recordings; Evenings at the Village Gate: John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy on Impulse!

I have a house guest, an old college buddy who doesn’t seem to want to leave. He hates Coltrane, so it’s Coltrane first music of the day and my entire collection if necessary. :weary:

Live in Japan should make your point nicely, all four discs if necessary. Consider it a double hit, John & Alice.

Guinga & Maria Joao : Mar Atora

Maria Joao may be an acquired taste for some but she’s an excellent singer and easy for me to enjoy because she reminds me strongly of a Brazilian Blossom Dearie, and over the decades I have become quite a Blossom Dearie fan.

A great listen.

Been thinking of my Dad this week as I always talked to him about the news each evening his last few years. And boy is there news to talk about. So I’m starting today with this one:

A favorite of his, and something I’ve heard with him on and off over my life

Thelonious Monk “The Classic Quartet” Candid cd 2023

After waffling I decided to order this new cd even though I do have a budget early cd of this in storage. This new remaster certainly would sound better than that cd in a side by side comparison. And it’s a great performance.

On the same day in Tokyo the Monk Quartet did this tv show performance, and a concert released by Columbia/Sony as a 2 disc set. The latter is stereo, this TV performance was recorded in mono.
