First music of the day

Curiosity got the best of me and I finally ordered a copy of this one.

Interesting, enjoyable. . . short.

Duke Ellington “The Conny Plank Session”

The third version of “Afrique” especially is quite involving, and it really shows what a presentation the Decware SEWE300B can dish out!

Followed by

“Herbie Nichols Trio” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

Fantastic music I will likely never tire of. This edition sounds very very good. The piano detail especially draws one in. It doesn’t quite unseat my previous favorite editon, the Japanese “24 bit by RVG” which has such a meaty presentation.

Kurt Rosenwinkel The Next Step
Kurt Rosenwinkel - guitar/piano
Mark Turner - tenor sax
Ben Street - bass
Jeff Ballard - drums

This one again before it goes back into the shelves. Disc 1 again too because I didn’t get enough of it before. A very nice live recording of intriguing music.

Jonathan Blake “Trion” disc 1

On to this one. . . after playing the Blake material makes me realize both how evolved and how consistent the form and the spirit of jazz is between these.

Sonny Rollins “The Complete A Night at the Village Vanguard” Blue Note Japan TOCJ 24 bit by RVG 2 cd set, disic 2

No introduction needed.

A fantastic album.

“Ithamara Koorax & Juarez Moreira – Bim Bom” Motema Music cd

It is time for some Keith Jarrett Trio. The music from this trio has its own special magic, opens up thoughts and feelings in my mind like no other.

Keith Jarrett “The-Out-of-Towners” ECM CD

Warmer this morning! We’ll have a bit of warmth before going cold again.

On another board there was a bit of talk about Eddie Higgins so I pulled a few from the shelves. This one is a nice solo piano recording----elegant playing.

Eddie Higgins “Time on my Hands” Arbors Jazz cd

Followed by

“Classic Don Byas Sessions 1944-1946” Mosaic Records disc IV

And on this this cool new release:

Abdullah Ibrahim “3” cd 1 (rehearsal recording)

Evidence of streaming, Balderdash!

??? Got the 2 cd set in the mail yesterday; I had pre-ordered via bandcamp. It’s an excellent release.

Aha! The post appeared to be a BC stream,

I just used that link to provide some information. Beautiful music, beautiful recording.

I started the morning off with this, “Duke at the Roadhouse–Roger Kellaway and Eddie Daniels Live in Santa Fe, NM”

Yesterday when I was playing this my wife Lucinda said “I like that classical music you were playing.” And I though yeah, it was jazz. . . no it was classical." It’s both and it’s fantastic! Eddie on reeds, Roger on piano and James Holland on cello. Amazing musicianship and interpretation and recording.

After “Duke at the Roadhouse” I am spinning this one:

Wolfgang Muthspiel “Where The River Goes” ECM cd

A touch of Brazilian warmth is nice to have this cold morning.

Eddie Higgins “Speaking of Jobim” Sunnyside cd

Followed by

McCoy Tyner “Time for Tyner” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

A perfect start for the day, Bill Evans Trio Sunday at the Village Vanguard. This is the recently reissued Craft LP, and is better than I expected in terms of pressing and sonic quality.

Playing this side again this morning. Interesting the amount of tremolo Wes is using in parts here–more than seems to have been recorded most elsewhere.

Wes Montgomery “Maximum Swing: The Unissued Half Note 1965 Recordings” Resonance Records, cd 1

Followed by . . . .

Something more. . . avant-garde. And about as far out as I enjoy listening.

Abthony Williams “Spring” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

Sounds great. I briefly compared it to the Japanese Blue Note 24 Bit by RVG LP facsimile cd, and that also sounds great, no clear winner for me in my system. Both are keepers.

Kicking off this Tuesday morning with Ida Lupino via the Steve Kuhn Trio on a CD reissue Three Waves. Surpisingly the cj premier 11a is holding its own with the new Wilson Audio SabrinaX speakers.

Jon Irabagon “Behind the Sky”

An interesting quintet date featuring Tom Harrell. I have become quite amazed at how Harrell can fit into so many configurations of jazz.

It’s cold enough up here this morning. . . but this cover picture made me put on a sweater.

Followed by something a bit warmer!

Bobby Hutcherson “Mirage” Landmark cd

A great quartet date from '91 with Tommy Flanagan, Peter Washington and Billy Drummond.

A recent 2023 Trost release, Akira Sakata & Entasis Live in Europe 2022.
