First music of the day

Chico Buarque “Sinal Fechado” cd

It’s cold outside. Chico’s Brazilian music will help warm us up. The system is sounding fantastic this morning.

Thanks. I’ve the CD so am familiar with the music, which I recently revisited. I find it to be fantastic. Regarding the double LP purchase at Dusty Groove and returnig th eLP to the shelf it is a matter of a self imposed spending cap of $500 at any one time. Even with my “trade discount” of 15% at DG I had to put it back on the shelf. Situation remedied as I ordered a copy Thursday. I have heard the LP since, which is splendid. I should add, Lovano with Crispell on ECM is worth seeking out. Be forewarned I’ve been a fan of Marilyn since her Braxton days. Soundprints is also fun.

Harry Bäcklund Featuring Lars Gullin “Remembering Harry” Anagram Records cd

Sound is decent, playing is beautiful.

“No recording dates/locations are given–The ten tracks come from eight different reel to reel tapes …”

Followed by another disc of beatiful music, disc 1 from Abdullah Ibrahim “3”

This is so gorgeous sounding (either the analog or the digital recordings herein) and such masterful playing. Pretty and soulful.

VERY underrated guitarist.

I might have mentioned how underrated he is.

Mingus Moves, ranking highly with latter day Charles MIngus ensemble work such as Changes 1 and Changes 2. The three aforementioned releases resulted in my continued appreciation for Don Pullen and George Adams. Rounding out this quintet are Ronald Hampton and Dannie Richmond.

Revisiting this one before it goes back into the shelves. The pianists are fascinating me this time.

Sun Ra preachiness and atmospherics.

Revisiting a mid-70s fusion jazz LP on the MPS label, Volker Kriegel Lift!, featuring John Taylor, Eberhard Weber, Sbigniew Siefert, John Marshall, Cees See, and Stan Sulzman. This LP offers a strong Eberhard Weber influence. I have not played it for over forty ears, and admit it holds up rather well.

Listening to the 1979 Affinity reissue Jimmy Lyons Other Afternoons with Lester Bowie, Alan Silva, and Andrew Cyrille. Other than Lester the combo is known for their work with Cecil Taylor. I posted two images as I have the Affinity, original BYG and a BYG reissue. The UK pressed Affinity is sounding just fine, nice and squeaky clean too.

Last night the February batch of 85th Anniversary UHQCD from Blue Note Japan arrived and I snuck in this listen:
Wayne Shorter “Night Dreamer”

Starting this morning with the more macabre titled “Dance with Death” from Andrew Hill.

The last to fill the gap in my collection from this Carnegie Hall Series.

Mary Lee’s Corvette “Blood on the Tracks”

Something a little different for me–a 2002 live recording covering Dylan’s album. A pretty straight-forward interpretation, nice to hear. One of my brothers would love this. . I’ve ordered him a copy.

I always thought a line from “Idiot Wind” resonates wth me “I can’t help it if I’m lucky.” She does a good renditon of “Idiot Wind” here.

Stumbled across this LP while archiving my collection, a fine follow-up to Friday Night in San Francisco, John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, Paco Lucia Passion Grace & Fire .

I’m listening to this disc yet again, I’m stuck here for now in this box set.

The dynamics in this 'fifties mono recording keep impressing me. And the music really connects me lately. I’ll move forward in this box set soon.

A late September 1992 Billy Bang session, A Tribute to Stuff Smith. This set features Sun Ra on keyboards, one of his last recordings that I am aware of. The session followed his debilitating 1990 stroke and subsequent convalescence with family in Birmingham. Le Sony’r Ra passed May 30, 1993.

Great 2 cd set compiling Mercury albums by Julian and Nat.

Eric T. Johnson “The Boston Quartets”

Mel Powell “It’s Been so Long” Vanguard cd

To include the title of a Cannoball album, this is “sophisticated swing” indeed.

I almost have all of Powell on Vanguard in one form or another. Great music.

All I had to do is see someone else listening to Betty Carter on a thread and BAM I had to play one of hers.

This is one of the final ones. . .

Betty Carter “It’s not about the Melody” Verve cd

Just an amazing record with a great cast of players.
