First music of the day

Sun Ra Arkestra at Joe Segal’s Jazz Showcase on Rush. I was at these gigs.

This one again before it goes back in the shelves. I love it!

DUDUKA DA FONSECA QUINTET “Samba Jazz - Jazz Samba” Anzic Records CD

Followed by

Miles Davis “Water Babies” Sony Blu-Spec CD2

This is sort of a schizophrenic cd as both sides are so different. I remember how exciting it was when this was first released on LP!

Classic line-up on this Delmark blues gem.

Good catch, listening to my newly-arrived copy of ‘Wish Me Well’, an excellent set.

Feels like winter out there! But our dogwood snapped into bloom, and I heard an owl either greeting me or telling me to “Git” and that was really cool.

Starting off the day with:

Tom Harrell “Prana Dance” High Note cd

A great studio release by this musician who I am appreciating more and more. Hope his health is improving (I’ve heard he canceled a few shows lately for health reasons).

Followed by

“The Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury Vol. 1, 1946-1949” disc 3

I’ve not listened to Ms Washington for a while. She was such a confident singer, and the backings here are always interesting to me.

I splurged and got the new re-pressing of the Thelonious Monk “Tenor” albums 7 LP box set from Analogue Productions. I had sold a few things, and bought it on impulse. I didn’t have any audiophile versions of these albums and had not listened to them (in the Complete Riverside Recordings cd box set) for some time. . . maybe I should not have, but there you go.

Listening to the first LP, “Brilliant Corners,” which is here in the mono mix. Sounds great with my current phono set up. Mastering by Kevin Gray and the pressing are excellent. I broke my rule about spending money on new LP reissues, but I always wanted this when it was first released on either LP or cd and couldn’t afford it then. . . I sortof can now.

Got into my seasonal home today around noon and just wrapped up the first of the season chores. All utilities are good, internet up and running after a few sputters. Stereo up and running and warming up nicely.
Initial outdoor clean-up chores are behind me before the rain hit. Time to settle in, as my Garmin informed me of a needed extended recovery period, LOL.

What to pick? Having a fully loaded SSD on my ZENith Mk III I hav come to the realization I may have too many choices. Can’t go wrong with this particular Myra Melford ensemble, where the players are open to experimentation and pushing limits nicely. This is the Dave Douglas I enjoy most, fine tone, probing and experimenting without falling into sentimentality.

Myra Melford Above Blue
Mtra Melford - piano
Chris Speed - tenor saxophone, clarinet
Dave Douglas - trumpet
Erik Friedlander - cello
Michael Sarin - drums

The system sounded better this morning, and I ran into this album and played its entirety.

Woke up to warmth! Lucinda and I had a wonderful warm evening with my brothers and most of their family last night, feeling really good today.

Starting off with

Grateful Dead, Veneta OR 1972
“Sunshine Daydream” box set, cd 3

Followed by

Chet Baker & Jack Sheldon “In Perfect Harmony: The Lost Album” Jazz Detective cd

This is a short but sweet fun album. Joe Moondragon’s electric bass is a highlight.
