Sorry for your lose.
Will do on March 5
Thanks, I get homesick from time to time. That area and North West CT is so beautiful.
Timm,
Guilty ! Yes, thanks, that was indeed my review on Audiogon. There are times I wish I had multiple rooms and the $$ to stuff them.
Thatās a brilliant way to describe the interaction between the Maggies and room. Having a lot of āairā around dipoles seems to be the key to letting them sound their best.
Of the speakers Iāve heard (and have by no means heard them all) the 20ā7ās are among the few āaffordableā ones that stopped me in my tracks and sucked me in. Others include the Vaughn Signature Plasmaās, Acoustic Zen Crescendo IIās, Sanders
Model 10e, M-L Renaissance 15ās ā¦
Of course, in never-never land, there is the grand Mac Daddy of planars, the Alsyvox Botticelli full-range ribbons. If you ever get a chance to hear these ā take advantage of it.

Well there is also the 30.7s as well. They need a room to breathe though. I listened to a new set just being run in for a customer at the dealer. I could hear their potential. They donāt need subwoofers at all, but you need to be farther away from the panels to achieve melding of the panels. I am 10 feet from center position from mine and the 30.7s were 12.5 feet to achieve integration of the panels. Bass was astonishing.
I have Goldenear Triton 1 which i think are the bees knees but your budget would stretch to the the Triton Reference. Built in powered subwoofers with many, many positive reviews. Good luck in your search!
Forgot about those, RsZk, but for moi they fall into the āunaffordableā category. I once had a used set of Tympani IVaās which were a similar configuration to the 30.7ās with double bass panels on each channel. Awesome bass, indeed. I still miss it.
But room setup was no easy feat. Wendell Diller made a stop at Listen Up in Denver on his national 30.7 tour. I wasnāt able to attend, but a number of Colorado Audio Society members whose ears I trust said it could charitably be described as a āhot mess.ā Fingers were being pointed at the room and too may people in it, but if the man from Magnepan has challenges getting them to sound right . . .
Speakers this BIG need a BIG room it seems.
Anyone have thoughts on Canton Reference 5K speakers? I have never heard Canton speakers. But a dealer has a demo pair at a fair price.
I can get the GE Triton Reference at a great deal. But I found ( in the past Triton 1 ) to sound too close to the Mythos ST-L, which I still own. But I have never heard the newer models. But since Sandy voiced both I assume they are still that way??
Its my understanding that the Triton Reference and the newer One.R are a big step up from the Triton one. Still voiced by Sandy though which is a good thing in my view!
Local dealer to me is setting up the Triton 1R soon for a demo. But If I do?? Buy GE I will opt for the Triton reference only.
Too bad the PSA AN series are so away still.
Anyone have thoughts on Canton Reference 5K speakers?
I would check out the audioaficianado site. There are threads specific to canton there
Another one I can get a good price on is the new Scansonic MB-6B. Iāve never heard them. No demo, just a good price. I donāt want to take a chance tho.
Darren are you still going to demo the 20.7? Just make sure the dealer has them before you make the drive. Not many do.
And fwiw dept - I suggest getting what you want / not the best deal necessarily or you will be back doing this again respending all over again.
Yes, Magnepan is on tour with the 30.7 so that is what I will be listening too at a dealer on Tuesday next week.
I am not in a rush, and I will know what is the right speaker once I hear them, whatever they maybe within budget.
Oh have fun. The 30s are monsters. I have yet to hear them. They make me feel like my 20.7 is a steal
Great thread! Fun traveling along on these searches.
Darren, I highly recommend holding off until April and taking a trip to Chicago for AXPONA. Youāll hear many interesting speakers in your price range and will have a blast. Itās an audio nutās Disney World. Try to do all three days, itās huge.
Take 5 is a nice store. Try Bar Pizza, definitely my favorite for amazing New Haven pizza.
Iāve had multiple B&Ws, McIntosh XRT1Ks, MartinLogan CLXes, and my current speakers are Raidho D1s with a pair of JL f112 v2. The big McIntosh speakers were great for cranking rock and for movies, but ultimately didnāt do it for me. I was never a big ML fan, but I fell for the CLXes. When they were good, they were phenomenal, but they are super fussy. Brutally unforgiving, half my collection was rendered unlistenable. They were also impossible to mate effectively with my sub and they did sound thin. Iāve heard the new flagship Neoliths 4 or 5 times now and I really donāt care for them. I may do Maggieās someday, but MLs are not for me.
The Raidhoās are simply amazing. Their placement is odd, they need to be far from each other and relatively close to you. It took some doing to get them right. I plug the ports and electronically cross them over to the subs, plus my room is pretty well treated. The system is terrific. Iāll get other speakers to rotate in and out, but I donāt see ever parting with the Raidhoās.
The Scansonics are similar to Raidhoās and definitely worth a demo.
Keep posting about your search, curious to see where you land!
Reminds me of my Apogees Calipers; one time coming out of the kitchen; our cat with both its paws teared up the right speakerās mid/woofer foil. I yelled, and she looked to me like saying; I know I shouldnāt have done this⦠but I couldnāt resist⦠and walked away.
I canāt got to Axpona. I will be at another event in MA the same weekend for work. Bummer.
