Fuse upgrade for P12

Question then…do you employ a power regenerator? Is all your gear
using the oem power cords?

Happy trails to you
just don’t run into Nellybelle :grin:

Yes, I do use regeneration, and is one of the best things you can do as an upgrade for any audio system, regardless of price. When it comes to fuses, we both know not all are created equal, and even in the same rated value, in the same category, (quick acting or time delay/slow blow) can vary greatly in resistance and melting temp. This is where you have to do your homework. Application for the fuse is also relevant. (speaker or power) You can find a number of manufacturers who produce ceramic, silica (sand) filled, nickle/brass end capped fuses. (in fact that is the primary design of ceramic fuses) For me, I have the knowledge and the capacity to build my own cables, and I only use UL approved cables for the intended purpose in that construction. For fuses, its rating, voltage drop and resistance are the same qualities one looks for as you do in a power cable. In cables, its geometry also plays an important role. For power, shielding does little to no good for EMI at 60Hz, that’s where geometry can assist. So in the end, yes, I do use regeneration, yes I use cables that are not OEM, and fuses that are very carefully selected, all being UL approved.

One of the options you may consider, is the Littelfuse 0285005. Which in comparison to the SR Orange, which uses brass/nickle in it’s construction, the 285’s have either true gold or rhodium-plated, which has no inferior nickle layer. Plus, it’s UL approved, and much more affordable.

These fuses appear to be rather standard glass or ceramic fuses with unknown filament and gold or rhodium flashed caps. How do they sound?

Brett, I think you’ll find that on the P12, a circuit breaker is the device utilized for the mains/primary transformer protection, not the 5A fuse. Also, the 285’s are plated, not flashed. Unknown filament? Littelfuse is one of the most respected in the industry, and used by PS Audio. Many times we see folks (and yes, even those who make aftermarket fuses, which many aren’t even UL approved, so in the end you really don’t know what you’re getting) derating their product in order to reduce the resistance at a given value. Concerning circuit breakers, a Potter & Brumfield W58 @ 5A for example, has an internal resistance of 0.026 ohm, when a NTE R58 is 0.225. Some Chinese 5A breakers are upwards of 1~2 ohm. Be careful in your selection.

Where do you source your upgraded Littelfuses?

These are rhodium.

Some of the amperage I’m interested in are seemingly only available in qty of 100 or 1000.

Anyone know of any sources that sell singles? Looking for a 1.6a slo 5x20. I’ve found Digikey sells 1A and 5A in singles but others are in bulk only.
