High End Espresso Machine Buying Guide & Remarks Regarding Roon, Harman & Samsung

I use a Turin DF64E single dose grinder. I think it has been discontinued but this is the closest version to it. Works great and has been rock solid. I also have a much more expensive one, but is hopper fed, not single dose, which I’ve learned to prefer the single dose more.

This one looks very intriguing, but then I read this regarding their burr options:

Both SSP options work well for espresso and which option is best for you will depend on the flavor you are looking for as well as the types of beans you use. SSP High Uniformity burrs are good for providing high mouthfeel, intense shots, balanced flavors with some floral / fruity flavors. They work well for all roast levels – light, medium and dark. SSP Unimodals have high clarity, sweet shots, well balanced with high extraction yields. They are best for higher brew ratios, such as 1:2, 1:3 or even more. They work best for medium and light roasts, but don’t work as well for dark roasts.

I’m sure this is important to the upper echelon of coffee aficionados to which I have zero aspirations, so my reaction was “really? all I want to do is grind beans!” Do I need a special burr for Tuesdays?

I’m definitively learning new stuff everyday! Didn’t know I was missing this yet…
Perhaps to be finding something unexpected below the Christmas tree?

You might want to upgrade the power cord and also investigate upscale fuses. Having the grinder sitting on special feet also makes for even grinding.

Just as normal people proclaim when subjected to our hobby: "All I want to do is listen to music. "

Hey! Don’t be throwing that in my face!

Yeah, I use the stock burrs that come with it. They work great. Those upgraded burrs are almost as much as the machine and are specific to various flavor effects. It parallels all the various audio tweaks, sure they no doubt improve the result, but at a huge cost relative to the price of the component at times.

One thing about grinders though, not all grinders are capable of all coffee grinding needs, ie fine enough grind for espresso or coarse enough for French press, etc. Consistent grinding and ability to make fine adjustments are very important to repeatable results.

Exactly!

I’ll agree with you on this!

I personally would stick to the stock burrs. After a while you might want to try one of the other two. You won’t know/appreciate the difference until you run stock for a while.

Not forgetting of course the ‘seasoning’ time required for new burrs, analogous to burn-in time in audiophile parlance :weary:

I bought one of those spikey things. What fun!

People pay $$$$$ for cables and only get to fiddle with them once, this you get to play with 3 times a day minimum and it only cost £50. Plus it actually does something useful.

It also has potential as a record weight. A small amount of reengineering may be required.

I have a lot of money invested in my coffee set up and it’s respectibly high end for a home coffee bar: Malkhonig ek43S, ECM Synchronika with flow control, BigStep tamper and distributor, VST baskets, upgraded shower head, ACAIA scale, other tools, proper water treatment system, etc. And seems like a bargain compared to high-end audio.

Latest purchases: AirLens, WWSLP7 I2S cable, better PC for the AirLens, HD Plex LPS for the Roon ROCK NUC … still to come: upgraded PC for the LPS and better connecting cords between the LPS and what it powers. Really feels like there’s no end to the chain – but stopping in between feels like cutting corners. Guess this is just sitting in the middle of the high cost of squeezing the last few percentage points of improvement of my system.

I HIGHLY recommend GAIA feet for your grinder and hard wiring in a Furutech power cable.

Gee, I thought my Nespresso machine was pretty nifty until I poked around in this thread.

Nespresso is like a Sprout100, it does everything right! For coffee that’s good enough for me too.

I am so disappointed! My Synchronika didn’t arrive yesterday. I called the dealer, Clive Coffee, to learn that it hasn’t shipped because of an extra Portafilter (bottomless) that I ordered. Instead of calling or emailing me to see if I was OK with taking delivery without it they held the order. Asked when the Portafilter was going to be available, I was informed “no ETA”. Did they think I was going to wait indefinitely? I requested them to ship without. I was then informed that it will “probably” ship at the end of the week with seven days of delivery time. Asked what “probably” meant and sensing my dissatisfaction they responded with “I will see what I can do”. Four weeks to deliver something in stock? Tomorrow morning I hope they enjoy discussing the email I just sent the owner.

I hate poor customer service. I am tempted to cancel.

Be careful, coffee may make you more nervous! And a nice infusion machine, like chamomile?
