High End Espresso Machine Buying Guide & Remarks Regarding Roon, Harman & Samsung

People seem REALLY into Ankersrum mixers right now. They seem to be having their moment. I’m a serious bread baker and my Kitchen Aid is in danger of dropping its planetary. It’s supposed to be fixable so I’ll try that, but if I can’t, I may need to invest. Bosch supposedly makes a nice mixer too, but I haven’t seen one in person. I’ve been generally pleased with Bosch appliances so far, so maybe…

Since retirement I’m always in a hurry in early morning. Nespresso is fast and good enough for me. I don’t havev10 minutes to make coffee or I will be late for my tee time.

I got burned by JURA and the per cup coffee from it costed like 10 time of Starbucks considering its longevity :slightly_frowning_face:

That guy was a fantastic inventor. He made some really great stuff and managed to have the business acumen to stay independent.

Alan Adler.

An admirable character.

Thanks

I did not know if him. A bit of interesting reading.

Yeah. I enjoy cranks that have vision. Reminds me a lot of Henry Kloss. Just creating cool stuff and doing whatever it takes to get things out there. He’s one I wish I’d gotten to meet.

Running right now based off of:

It’s been at two hours and there’s been several new recordings. Roon Radio has steadily improved into something quite excellent.

Have you tried using a Hob with the Moka pot on the induction burners?

@JohannSeb - What machine do you have?

Our new machine may be ready on Saturday. It’s an ECM Synchronika. I am having it modified with flow control valve and a nanometer in the group head to permit a 2 - 3 Bar, ten second pre-infusion before the the valve gets turned to 7 - 9 Bar depending on the beans.

I also am having the joysticks (no ball valves) handles replaced with walnut.

Another of my favorite brewing devices. I need to break out mine. I don’t think I have used it all year. It must be lonely.

That makes me feel like I belong at the big boy table coming from you!!

A MOD on a coffee machine! I’m glad I’m not as addicted to coffee as audio. One addiction is enough for me. Wait, I have a large collection of red wines, but I consider that as an investment, not an addiction :wine_glass:

Uh huh…

I understand there’s a bridge near you for sale :innocent:.

The AeroPress is remarkable. It’s one of those things I wish I had thought to make. It’s quite ingenious and the quality of coffee is fantastic.

There’s definitely something going on with audio at Samsung:

One bug remains for me. It’s often plays the Qobuz version of a song vs. the local library.

I’ve tried a few different espresso machines over the years, and the one I have now is not an “end game” purchase necessarily, but is so astoundingly good - both in the nectar in the cup and the processes involved to make it and clean up - that I’ll just point you in the direction of a small outfit:

I have essentially the R24. I actually bought the LR model back in 2019 or 2020, and converted it recently to the R24. I’m not familiar with the newest model, the Vectis, or even the Compressa that preceded it, but those might be options to consider.

If you are not just a bit mechanically inclined, it might not be the brand for you. The owner is based out of New Zealand and provides direct support on-line and via telephone, but you’ll be doing the work yourself if work is needed. I’m good with all that, and the support has been fantastic.

Before buying I considered that if Reiss, the man behind the brand, were hit by a bus, how would I get support? The machines are made by a U.K. firm called Fracino, so it seems likely hardware would continue to be available.

Ongoing maintenance is quite simple. Reiss developed special greaseless seals for the system, so that eased maintenance. I suspect they need to be replaced every 12-24 months, but it’s a pretty simple task.

There isn’t any “backflushing” the group to clean it like on most (all?) non-lever machines, but there is some basic cleaning to do after preparing your drink(s). I power on in the morning using a smart-plug and have that set to turn off when I usually leave for work. It’s all pretty simple… and delicious.
