Holo Red impressions

Seems like Cardi(Richard) was somehow covering up that pin so it didn’t make contact.

No sound from USB. Can only one ouput be plugged into Red at once?

I think you have to unplug the I2S and with the usb connected power cycle the Red.

I think…

Trying that now…thanks Vince.

That’s a negative, Ghost Rider.

Reboooting the DAC now….

I suppose I need to look at the manual.

Good luck with that. It’s a bit of an enigma. (At least to my eyes.)

Supposedly they are all active at the same time but don’t know if they can all be occupied at the same time.

Just plugged the Ethernet cord and Pink Faun LAN Idolator back into the Bridge II. The magic (clarity, clean bass, etc) is back. No bloat.

The BridgeII has a bad rap, I personally liked it.

My streamer has an auto select on I2S. Everytime I reboot it would switch from USB to I2S, until I found a way to turn the auto select off. But I do not know if Red has the similar fuction.

There’s no output selection in the Red OS as that’s done at the DAC. With the Aries or the Zen Stream you can have multiple outputs connected as you designate the active one in the streamer software.

@scotte1 - here’s what I have for my config for USB output:

Vince

Are you hearing any of the bloated bass and muddled sound that Scott’s hearing as I don’t.

No flak from me. Curious if you can hear the difference the power supply makes actually by trying the smps that comes with the M1T. It seemed a pretty solid little brick. Though I had a spare Keces LPS then and I recall giving it the nod.

With a few hours of listening, I personally don’t here any bloat through our headphone amps. But assuming the Red needs to break-in a bit, I am going to stream to it 24x7 for a week or so with the amp off when not listening to it.

I am currently using an AQ Diamond out of the Red.

Edit - with a Roon stream I need to leave the amp on or Roon won’t see the zone. I will mute the volume.

Side note/question for you and @vkennedy61:

If you are Roon users, what have you settled on as the best combination of sound quality and convenience with regard to the Volume Control setting in the Roon Device Set Up menu?

The options are:

DSP Volume
Device Volume
Fixed Volume

I currently bypass all DSP in Roon so that leaves the latter two choices.

Cheers.

@dawkinsj @vkennedy61:

I feel like such a newb every time I get into setting up network devices.

On the Roon side of things, I figured out just this morning that I had to add the DS DAC USB input as an endpoint/device and enable it. Doh!

That’s done so more critical listening and trouble shooting is on the breakfast menu this morning.

Hopefully, I can get that input working for Roon and JRMC today.

More to come (if you can stand it)…

Update:

Put Holo Red back in the signal path (Bridge II card still in DAC but not connected, for now).

Sound has cleared up with JRMC. No idea why….

Maybe a series of on-line reboots of the Holo Red has done something to the OS causing it to settle? Could the I2S cable be the key? See RE: Pre-Emphasis below.

Pre-Emphasis flag for 44.1 files on DS DAC screen is gone. :man_shrugging:. Only changes to hook up was I connected the Red’s I2S output to I2S-2 on the DS DAC instead of I2S-1 and swapped the Pink faun Interlink I2S cable for the RAL I2S to serve the Red. The RAL is now connecting the DMP to the DS DAC I2S-1 input.

Still can’t get USB input on DS DAC to work with JRMC…

Baffling stuff…

Going to see how Roon sounds next.

[PS, Roon sounds great too (and no Pre-Emhasis flag]

Going to go radio silent for a while and stop monopolizing this thread.

Got a playlist on repeat and going to see if this gizmo gets even better with time.

Thank you, everyone, for your patient assistance.

Looking forward to hearing from others regarding their experiences with the Red…
