It’s not, you’re hallucinating.
After running the Holo Red for a while with the Tubulus HDMI into the DS MkII, I’m hard pressed to say I can hear any difference between it playing music off my NAS, and my PST playing the same CD to the DAC over a Dragon 48 HDMI. Maybe I don’t need a Lumin U2. I just wish the Tubulus had Pin 19 connected so I’d get a correct pre-emphasis status.
Sounds good! Did you happen to switch cables, to find out how that would influence your assessment. Or is this your ideal combination?
I haven’t switched cables (yet), but I’m figuring it may not mean much. I was using a WW Platinum 7 on the Holo Red previously, which was actually quite good. The Tubulus is just enough better to where distinguishing now between it and the PST really isn’t worth it.

A reason to try the Dragon 48 would be to see if the pinout might be different and correct the pre-emphasis. I also think you would get the same quality of sound with no pre-emphasis problems by using a Concentus USB or similar cable.
I know already know from use with the PST that the Dragon does not have the pre-emphasis problem. I have a couple of old CDs that had pre-emphasis used.
Does the Tubulus activate the pre-emphasis with the PST?
I would have to switch them to find out, but as this has already been reported by other users of the Tubulus, and confirmed by Tubulus themselves, it seems like it’s already a known thing.
Didn’t know if it was just a Tubulus thing or a combination of Tubulus and the Red.
It might be the Red as well, so yes your suggestion to try the Dragon is a good one. If it still shows the problem I’ll have to tell Ted Conner there’s one more thing to fix (along with no bit perfect data transfer over USB).
Hi all. I’m having the devil of a time trying to get my Holo RED to output via USB. I2S has always worked fine.
I connected the USB output on the RED to the USB input on the DS DAC Mk2. Power cycled the DAC.
Rebooted the RED.
I think I should be seeing an additional option (for the DSD Mk2 USB) in the Output Device dropdown list. But I’m not.
When streaming from Roon to the RED, the green LED shows on the DAC, but I’m not seeing a bit rate/depth indication. Nor am I getting sound out of the DAC.
What am I missing?
Thanks in advance
You have to tick that box and reboot the Red
Sorry, tick which box? One of the USB redirectors?
Yes, the top one. It’s in the instructions.
There is no other option
You are saying that there should be another option for the DS DAC Mk2 USB? That’s what I thought…
I tried that previously. Let me have another go…
Nup.
I see no entry for the RED in Roon Audio devices with the configuration above.
When I select a redirector, Red O/S clears the output device and gives me this message:

Because now the Red is strictly a DDC. It must lead to streamer/dac via i2S
mmm. Dunno. I think the Redirector is for the DCC function.
I want to continue to use the Red as a streamer - just with USB out instead of I2S out.
I’m pretty sure it is possible to use the Red as a network streamer (Ethernet in) and output via USB to a DAC.
Turn both devices off. Check and re-seat the USB cable and make sure you are in the right USB slot. Boot up both devices one at a time with Mk 2 first. Go back into the Red setup and a selection should be available for the USB DAC other than the Holo choices. If all that fails try another USB cable no matter how cheap to make sure the cable is not the issue. Do not check the boxes at the bottom.
