Hope everyone in the Boulder area is staying safe

Yes!

Two degrees is legitimately cold. I hope the house heats up relatively quickly.

Just shocked at the devastation in Boulder and the surrounding area. I am thinking about the PSAudio family and hope all are doing well. Best wishes for safety, health and recovery to all impacted!

I’ve been following the investigation of the cause of the fire with some interest as our neighborhood is bordered by a grassy natural area directly east of the foothills with an electrical substation located in the vicinity. We routinely see tumbleweeds blown out of the natural area rolling down the street on windy days. (File under: things that make you go “hmmmm.”)

Turns out that there were no downed powerlines as initially thought. A phone video taken in the area that investigators have pinpointed as the likely “ground zero” shows a storage shed on fire. No conclusions yet, but the Boulder County Sheriff has issued a search warrant for the property.

I find it a little strange that even with 100 mph winds reported, that there were no downed powerlines. Also when looking at the pictures of the burned out homes, there were trees that were untouched by fire or wind.

I think it is not that there were NO downed powerlines - there definitely were some - but that the lines originally assumed to be the source were not the source. Downed lines near there turned out to be telecom lines rather than power, and the focus currently is on a shed on private property that was seen blazing like a torch which appears to be the origin point. As the cost will likely be in the billions, they’re moving very carefully with the investigation. And they may never know.

As far as the freakishly surviving pines, I imagine they’ll turn out to be alien in origin🤠

Aliens and a massive conspiracy.

Natural processes often behave oddly, especially fire and tornadoes.

Another odd thing is, the fire didn’t spread evenly. There were several isolated pockets of homes that were burned down, which suggest there was more than one ignition source.

@Gary_M With the winds and dry conditions, fires leapfrog all over the place, and new starts are always happening. Tough conditions to fight fire in.

"The Boulder Office of Emergency Management also said power company Xcel Energy “found no downed powerlines.”

THat’s in reference to the initial source.

Why would you assume it should spread “evenly”? There were 100mph winds throwing sparks and chunks of burning stuff everywhere, carrying it up into the air and depositing it randomly. Sort of “straight line” winds, but more like a cross between a tornado and straight winds.

100 mph winds snap trees and powerlines like twigs. Looking through photos of burned out homes, you’d expect to see lots of downed and burned trees.

Consistent with your point, flaming brands and embers easily travel multiple miles ahead of the active front of a wildfire, and over 50% of areas burned come from red rain; burning embers falling on homes and other flammable objects. The embers do not distribute evenly.

I know a few who teach prairie burns and are otherwise deal with natural fires. Their stories of fire behavior are incredible.

OK, the pictures you chose do not portray what you personally believe would be the case.

So what is your point as it relates to this catastrophe?

Nature is unpredictable.

Recommended reading for the curious.

Maybe should be in the “whatcha reading” thread, but the subject matter applies directly to events like this one: $14 on Amazon and worth it.

From the description it appears this book would be fascinating.

It appears related to chaos theory.

Neat stuff
